Hey TMC, happy 25th! (my brain is a little slower than some who choose to abstain from a certain activity)

Interestingly enough, the best coffee shop I visited in Amsterdam is owned by a pair of Americans from Delaware... it's called the "Grey Area." It's got a real American stoner vibe to it, being one of a few shops with actual house bongs... plus they sell their stuff in US weight, while everyone else uses the metric system. I also played (what seemed like) the longest game of chess here too.

The red light district was super clean, much like the rest of the city. I guess it's regulated by the government, so it has to be pretty legit. Walking through it, some of the girls are kinda flirty aggressive- they'll just tap the windows and smile at you... whereas I've heard stories about the third world girls being just in your face aggressive cuz they need the money. We stayed clear, just b/c the idea is still kinda foreign to us.

While I expected the city to be kind of like a party central, Amsterdam had a real calm and conservative vibe to it. The citizens just went about their business and the buildings and cobblestone streets reflected a historic atmosphere. Although I heard stories of being able to ask a cop for a light, I learned it's really not polite to smoke outside in public... I noticed a group of people leaving the area around me the first and only time I tried it.

Oh yeah, for anyone thinking of visiting: beware of the space cakes and shakes... the stuff is pretty strong. I ate a space cake in one shop and kind of lost my motor abilities to walk (or so my brain told me). And then I got munchies and proceeded to eat more cakes, forgetting that they weren't normal baked goods... those were the days...

I read something recently about trying to make weed legal in Nevada and have a trial federal/state run pot store...which in my opinion would lead ultimately to its TOTAL legalization and de-criminalization...

cause prostitution's legalization in nevada has really made inroads in virginia and texas...

they need a safety test for drivers before they can attempt that.

Re: Why are cigarettes legal, but marijuana illegal?

I have a hard time believing that pot could be made widely available in any one state, even if it was legalized there, because it is still considered a federal crime to possess/smoke it. IN place like California, for instance, it is legal for medical purposes but you still have to keep it (and the shops that sell it) on the down low because the Feds are constantly looking for doctors who prescribe it for their patients so they can bust them.
I feel like the same thing would happen in Nevada. The local and state cops would ignore it but the whole state would be crawling with DEA agents.

I've heard this type of thing many times before. But it will never happen. I'm pretty sure there's a federal law against pot, so the state laws don't supercede (correct me if I'm wrong).

However, it doesn't even matter if there is federal law prohibiting it. Can you imagine the extreme border control problems between NV and the bordering states which outlaw pot? The state and federal gov't would never allow that to happen. If it's not legal in the entire country, it'll never be legal anywhere inside it.

You can always hope for decriminalization though (no jail time -- just fines)

Pot is illegal on the federal level. No matter where you are in the United States, a federal agent can arrest you for possession. This however is rather difficult to do since there only 2000 or so DEA agents (correct me if I'm wrong) and Marijuana isn't really top priority.

States can have laws that protect you from local authorities, but no-one can protect you from the Federal Government. However it is pretty unlikely to be busted by the DEA for Marijuana.....

I think Denver has decrimilized pot, and many parts of the country are following suit. You'll start to see the more liberal areas of the country doing this more and more, and usually that's in the major cities.

In D.C. it's virtually impossible to get a conviction, I had a buddy at school charged with intent to distribute, and his case was thrown out of court. It helps the police focus on serious crime, which in my eyes is a more efficient policy.

How about Canada, aren't there legal pot cafes or something up there?
