Considering their last album debuted at #2 on the charts and they can still sell out places like Madison Square Garden on consecutive nights, I guess enough people out there do give a flying horse shit about them.

I usually don't trust Wikipedia, but I have always heard reports about him shooting off his mouth in concerts and disappointing people. This seems to back up the reports I've heard:

Quote:
The band, and especially frontman Eddie Vedder, have been vocal supporters of the pro-choice movement. In 1992 Spin printed an article by Vedder, entitled "Reclamation", that detailed his views on abortion.[84] In an MTV Unplugged concert the same year, Vedder stood on a stool and wrote "PRO-CHOICE!" on his arm in protest.[32] The band are members of a number of pro-choice organizations, including Choice USA and Voters for Choice.[81]
As members of Rock the Vote and Vote for Change, the band has encouraged voter registration and participation in United States elections. Vedder was outspoken in support of Green Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader in 2000[85] and Pearl Jam played a series of concerts on the Vote for Change tour in October 2004, supporting the candidacy of John Kerry for U.S. President. In a Rolling Stone feature showcasing the Vote for Change tour's performers, Vedder told the magazine, "I supported Ralph Nader in 2000, but it's a time of crisis. We have to get a new administration in."[86]
Vedder usually comments on politics between songs, often to criticize U.S. foreign policy, and a number of his songs, including "Bu$hleaguer" and "World Wide Suicide", are openly critical of the Bush administration. At Lollapalooza 2007, Vedder spoke out against BP Amoco dumping effluent in Lake Michigan; at the end of "Daughter", he sang the lyrics "George Bush leave this world alone/George Bush find yourself another home". In the beginning of the second encore Vedder invited Iraq war veteran Tomas Young, the subject of the documentary Body of War, onto the stage to urge an end to the war.

My guess is you wouldn't be saying he's shooting off his mouth and disappointing people if he was talking about policies you agree with

Your referring to a select few incidents, I've seen them multiple times and I've never heard much political talk from them, and when I have it's usually well received by the crowd. As I said they are political but that's definitely not what they're all about.

And I'd say a good majority of PJ fans probably lean to the left anyway.

Well I don't agree with much of what Mr. Vedder has to say about politics...but that doesn't stop me from liking the music. In my opinion, "Black" is probably a top 5 song of the 1990s

Re: Pearl Jam on tour this summer

All this talk about politically active artists brings up a good issue.

How much do youi all care about political the stances of artists?

I long ago decided not to care since I disagreed with so many of them. I figured I'd be spending too much time trying to figure out which movies and songs I was allowed to like based on their political views. I don't have the time or energy for that stuff. I don't agree almost at all with most of what Vedder believes but I still like their sound, adore several of their songs, and think they get shafted in the Nirvana/Pearl jam debates. They are WAY BETTER than Nirvana in my opinion. I love 'em and don't care what they think.

In general though what do you all think?

Re: Pearl Jam on tour this summer

I feel if they want to speak out that's their right and I don't have to agree if I don't want to. I don't base my opinion of their music or of them as an artist based on what their political views are.

As for the Nirvana/PJ comparisons I don't think there even should be one. Yes they both came from Seattle and helped to usher in the whole grunge movement but other than that they really don't have much else in common musically.

I think that's an interesting topic, that probably deserves its own thread

Ah yes, that is a great song. My favorite song is Alive. I still have that ranked #1 from the 90's.

I think Black is essentially the anthem for grunge rock in the 90's. Sorry Teen Spirit but you suck. Black kicks your ass.

I do wonder where Nirvana would be today had Cobain not killed himself / been killed.
