| Why Weren't The Monkees Allowed To Play? Am I alone in feeling that Don Kirchner was too agressive in insisting on using studio musicians? I mean clearly there was a creative bombshell waiting to burst here: Clearly Johnny Cash agrees with me, 70Chip:

I assure you that this thread is as serious as it could be. I think Peter Tork was building a geodesic dome in Arizona. As to your excellent question about the original question, Don Kirchner produced two Monkees albums, then met with the boys about a third at which time he proposed the song "Sugar, Sugar" and was threatened with bodily harm by Micheal Nesmith. I think "Sugar, Sugar" would have been a huge hit for them myself:

| Re: Why Weren't The Monkees Allowed To Play? Boys.......that is some wierdness! I feel all......crawly inside. It was, however entertaining in that....nostalgic way. Admittedly, I watched the Monkee's as well when I was a kid. JC though is a different matter.....serious talent

| Re: Why Weren't The Monkees Allowed To Play? I can recall summers eating tuna sandwiches and watching reruns of The Monkees and Gidget (the original one with Sally Field) before heading off to baseball, football, or basketball practice. Good times. Great songs

| Re: Why Weren't The Monkees Allowed To Play? LOL. Thank you Yeah, it was summer/fall rec leagues. I don't remember the exact breakdown but if I remember right it was something like July: Tuesdays-Basketball, Thursdays-Baseball, August: Tuesdays-Basketball, Wednesdays-Football, Thursdays-Baseball. or something like that.
