I know he is the first AA to hold office which is a great acheivement but after that he is just another person and thats how I look at him.

If you have not heard some one degrade a AA by comparing him/her to an ape/monkey then you may want to crawl out of the rock you have been living under.

I don't want to get into the race thing and maybe your point is valid about that cartoon.

HOWEVER, that's what editors are for, and for them to miss the racist implication in this is inexcusable. The editor who blew it should be fired and if I'm the Post, I don't use this cartoonist anymore either.

I agree with you. At no time do Ithink the cartoonist intial was trying to make a racist remark but that was a poor choice to use because many will think he is racist.

Y'all are so damn sensitive. I don't remember anyone saying anything when they made W into a monkey almost every week. Oh what about when they made Condi into the black crow that sat on his shoulder and whispered into his ear?
No Saden, I didn't draw that cartoon. I do think it is funny though. My co-workers are saying that its racist as I write this. Everything is racist to them so I really don't care.

I don't think the editor and cartoonist are racist, I just don't think they're very bright. What were they thinking? It was funny? That everyone would laugh along? Even worse than the cartoon was the response. They don't even have the ability to recognize the reception of the cartoon was not what they expected and squash the controversy as quickly as possible. No, instead we get an idiotic response to criticism with "if you’re going to make that about anybody, it would be Pelosi, which it’s not."

I don't think there was racial intent either, BUT I can certainly understand how it could be seen that way.

We're dealing with Jouralism majors, not rocket scientists, what should we expect

I'd lump these two idiots in with Greg Brown.

I always thought decency was universal. As for lumping them with Greg Brown, I protest. GB has a special place all by himself :p

It could also be that maybe they are not racist so it never crossed their mind that this could be seen as racist.

If that's the case I think it proves saden's point about them not being very bright.

Re: Chimp beatdown

A few points:

1. I lay the blame for this chimpanzee business squarely at the feet of Clint Eastwood. Every Which But Loose and its brilliantly titled sequal, Any Which Way You Can apparently convinced too many people that primates make great pets.

2. As regards the NYP, most political cartoons are not funny anyway, so to fault the comic nature of the piece as a kind of fall back criticism is a little too easy. The logic seems to be "It's not explicitly racist, but we don't want to let Murdoch and his boys off the hook completely, because we know they're evil, so we will find them guilty of being unfunny."

The worst thing you can say about this cartoonist is that he should have realized that in the age of Obama, the Al Sharptons of the world have a desperate need to demonstrate that America is still as racist as ever, maybe even more so, because that's how they make their living. No racism, no money. No racism, no need for the NAACP at all.

This is my favorite sentence ever. May I make it my sig please? I know I am often a sarcastic bastard, but I am in bitter earnest when I say that this sentence is unparalelllled in its brilliance. I think it's the use of "This Chimp" instead of "The Chimp" that won me over. Or perhaps its the folksy clause, "As I understand it" with it's echoes of Sinclair Lewis, Thornton Wilder, and Edward Arlington Robinson, that sealed the deal. Then you go "the town" instead of "this town" or "that" town. That's how Steinbeck would have played it as well. It absloutely sings, this sentence.
