Re: Health Insurance Plans:

Daseal, between your thoughts and the advice in this thread, sounds like you are on the right track. Once you figure out exactly what you want covered, shop around.

In the DC Area, CareFirst BC/BS has a solid reputation, as well as MAMSI/United HealthCare. I have Unicare through my company (based in VA) and it's been decent. I fought with them during my first child's birth over some coverage issues, but other than that, they've been pretty good with everything else. These are the 3 companies I've had experience with, but there are others.

I guess I'm trying to say for any of the quotes you get, make sure you ask others what they think of the company and their experiences. It would suck to get into a plan and end up paying a whole lot more than you bargained for.

My first son was born in Colorado, was in NICU, had to have a specialist brought in. Turned out, he was the only one in the area, but he wasn't on our plan. After literally years with the insurance commissioner involved, we got most of it covered, but still had about $5000 dollars worth of out of pocket.

Most plans I have seen if you go out of network you just pay more out of pocket but its still covered by the policy.

^ WOW!

$350 to deliver my son last year. That included pre-natel care leading up to the birth. It was a normal vaginal birth with two days in the hospital, he was in good health when born.

I was like what a deal! Since then I have been paying thur the nose for him, =)

Do what I do, don't leave the house until we get universal health care and you'll be alright.
