Re: Guard watches coast for oil slick's first wave

BP needs to get there ass in gear and take care of this bullsh*t yesterday. Being that their as of DEC 2009 the 5th most profitable business in the world, they should afford be able to contain this, but these piss poor bastards cant even stop the leak at this point. Its really unbelievable they are not prepared to deal accidents, because they do happen. I hope with the "drill baby drill" mantra in Va being spewed, the Governor will take a look at this disaster and hold the companies to a higher safety standards and get assurance when accidents do happen the response is better than this.

Bill Maher had a funny tweet yesterday:

Every asshole who ever chanted 'Drill baby drill' should have to report to the Gulf coast today for cleanup duty

Get real dude, we aren't talking about a garden hose. The hole is at the bottom of the Gulf, you don't just go and put a band-aid on it like it was a little boo-boo. But I guess in our good ole' instant society, of which I am a happy member, it should have been done yesterday.

Check the facts on how much pressure this oil is under, or how deep it is. A tragic example, is the mining explosion, they weren't able to just go rushing in to try and save those guys, they had to account for what nature was doing.

I am not defending BP, I don't really know how long it would take a super well prepared team to go and stop the spill, but somehow, your basic expectation seems simply unrealistic.

Re: Guard watches coast for oil slick's first wave

Here is an interesting article on what is being done. It is from 4 days ago, so there are newer details I am sure:

Robot plugging Gulf oil spill

Quote:
Crews are using robot submarines to activate valves at the well head in hopes of cutting off the leak, which threatens the Gulf Coast's fragile ecosystem of shrimp, fish, birds and coral. If the effort fails, they'll have to start drilling again.

The submarine work will take 24 to 36 hours, Doug Suttles, chief operating officer for BP Exploration and Production, said Sunday afternoon. "I should emphasize this is a highly complex operation being performed at 5,000 feet below the surface and it may not be successful," he said.

Oil continued to leak nearly a mile underwater Sunday at the site where the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on Tuesday. Eleven workers are missing and presumed dead. For the second consecutive day, high waves prevented boats and equipment from going out to clean the spill. Airplanes sprayed chemicals to break up the oil.

So this is acceptable? WOW...Your talking about a massive company who for massive profits does this all the time claiming they have this advance technology and ability to have limited impact to the environment around them and has a pretty good track record, but accidents do happen. Yes my expectation by now is they should have the ability to stop the leak. Sorry I set high standards when it comes to potential man made environmental disasters.

Re: Guard watches coast for oil slick's first wave

Yeah, BP should foot the entire cleanup bill. Politically it just keeps getting better for dems. This should give them cover in axing coast drilling....hopefully they'll use it.

It would be unacceptable if all efforts were not being undertaken to stop the leak, and clean it up. Or if the company said my bad so sad. From what I can see, they have taken full responsibity AND have been mobilized around the clock since it happened. I tell you what, if you can answer how it could have been done differently, or what action they failed to take than your opinion might have some validity, but to say that just because x number of days has passed it ought to be stopped, ignores the reality of the situation. It's like the Madden version of environmental emergency response.
