I'm not defending this kid -- he should take the job and continue looking -- but $40K/year = $20/hour and that's not much in this economy.
In an economy that has 9% unemployment I don't think anyone should complain about $40k, and for a kid fresh out of college he could do a hell of a lot worse.

Re: The New Generation???

Again $40K starting out, and no obvious expenses, is a helluva lot. no disrespect GDAS, if he had a high rent place yeah maybe 40K would not be a lot, but that's not the case. And 40K isn't the topped out max, but a foot in the door, not his ending salary, and if he is capable, his income would rise soon enough. and last I checked $40K >> $0 even after the government gets its share.

I wonder if he is counted as 1 of the uninsured in the US? should our tax dollars provide him health care? Should there be a clause in the health care, like there is in unemployment, that if you are able bodied, and turn down employment, then you get no health care benefits? Just asking.

It's what the people of Mass voted on, but you make a good point. It seems bogus to me, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Did they vote on healthcare for a 24 yo with a 40K job in hand turning it down, or did they vote on the idea of a child sick and unable to get needed medicine due to a mother on welfare and a deadbeat dad.

But the State has that right, I just think it exemplifies the abuses that will be pervasive in far more complex Federal system.

Re: The New Generation???

Damn kids too lazy to even pick pocket now-a-days.....

The lost art of pickpocketing: Why has the crime become so rare in the United States? - By Joe Keohane - Slate Magazine

But even if Fagins abounded in the United States, it's unclear whether today's shrinking pool of criminally minded American kids would be willing to put in the time to properly develop the skill. "Pickpocketing is a subtle theft," says Jay Albenese, a criminologist at Virginia Commonwealth University. "It requires a certain amount of skill, finesse, cleverness, and planning, and the patience to do all that isn't there" among American young people. This is "a reflection of what's going on in the wider culture," Albenese says.

Not a single one of my friends are like that guy. 40k a year? I've never made more than 22k in a year, and granted I've taken the work now/put off college till later path, but gd. You can't be picky when so few opportunities are available.

Re: The New Generation???

On the surface I think this kid is making a mistake, but there may be more to it than meets the eye. I had an interesting path to and through college. Out of high school I worked a job for about 10/hr, it was hot as hell, and sucked. While going there I was going to a local community college. Finally I went off to Mason full time. To making money during the summer/weekends I woke up at 2-3AM to deliver bread. It was hard and dirty work that basically ruined most of my weekends.

When I graduated college, I had one major criteria. I wanted to work during the day and have most weekends off. I turned down a job because it was working at night and got Tues/Thurs off. I ended up taking a day shift with the same schedule. Two months later I left for another job that had worse hours 1-10PM, less money, but more interesting work and security clearance. More importantly, weekends off.

Fact is, when you get your foot in the door and prove yourself as capable you can go a long way. In that first year I got 4 promotions. When my boss left to go to another company he brought me with him and in a little over a year my salary has almost doubled since when I started. It requires a combination of things to make a career work.

If he really feels there's no mobility or hates the company, I understand it. It's important not to hate your job or what you do -- if you can afford it. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet. I took whatever job I could find because I needed money, but if I had a little freedom, I probably would have kept looking. It wasn't that I thought I was too good for the job, I just knew it wasn't a good fit for me and there wasn't anywhere to go within the company.

Re: The New Generation???

If they keep extending unemployment people will keep sitting on their ass. I wish I had a dollar for every person who has called acting like they are looking for a job when they know I was not hiring just so they can meet unemployment requirments. Then two weeks a back when I was advertising for a postion I had 3 people call. Its a freaking joke and I've had several customers just call and ask up front if they could use me for unemployment.
