It's not as dangerous as you'd think. When ammo gets hot enough to explode, they act like miniature bombs rather than bullets. It doesn't really project the bullet, like it would if fired from a gun. When it's not loaded in a gun, there is nothing limiting the escape of the energy, so it dissipates much more quickly, and with less concentration.
