Analysis later indicated that, unlike most cosmic radio signals that originate in the Milky Way or a nearby neighbor galaxy, these four seem to have come from beyond.

Whatever triggered the bursts has come and gone. The signals, detected between February 2011 and January 2012, were one-time events so little follow-up work can be done.

What is known is that in just a few milliseconds, each of the signals released about as much energy as the sun emits in 300,000 years.
this is scaring the crap out of me right now.

im thinking a cosmic blast travelling at uncalculable speeds will just wipe out planet earth at any moment.

we will not have any warning or indication.

in a blink of an eye, everything and everyone is gone.

i blame parenthood for this.

They have about 200 hands-on experiments covering most aspects in phyics, including a trebuchet that launches cantaloupes about 200 feet. (I call it a cantapult.) When we have to choose between the Physics Fair and Maryland Day, we always choose the Physics Fair (even though I work at Maryland).

Hope these suggestions will be useful.
that sounds like an awesome day. will put in my memory bank.

I'm guessing it's a huge weapon triangulating on our planet.

At least it will be over in a flash.

lol.

RR, are you a fan of the rogan podcast by chance? Seems it would be up your alley if you've never listened...

The rise of the digital nanny state

Health and wellness wristbands may not be nannies today. But what about down the line? Health insurance companies and employers are beginning to see the potential cost benefits of clients and employees mining their activity data.

Health insurance company Aetna launched CarePass – a fitness app it made available to consumers in June. The app can import data from Withings‘s Wi-Fi-enabled scales, Jawbone’s Up and Fitbit’s Flex. The app doesn’t replace your physician, but it can help you be a bit more honest about your habits between appointments.

“They realize that this is stuff that they’ve never had,” said Jawbone’s Bogard of health insurance companies, “they’re starting to realize there’s this whole aspect of observations of daily living that’s not necessarily something you’re making a diagnosis on.”

Ah, technology, how I love thee.....

Oh RR, just sit back, relax and be assimilated. You know resistance is futile.

And now the good news!

Anti-CD47 antibody may offer new route to successful cancer vaccination

In the new study, the Stanford team showed that after engulfing the cancer cells, the macrophages presented pieces of the cancer to CD8+ T cells, which, in addition to attacking cancer, are also potent attackers of virally infected or damaged cells. As a result, the CD8+ T cells were activated to attack the cancer cells on their own. “It was completely unexpected that CD8+ T cells would be mobilized when macrophages engulfed the cancer cells in the presence of CD47-blocking antibodies,” said MD/PhD student Diane Tseng, the lead author of the study. Following engulfment of cancer cells, macrophages activate T cells to mobilize their own immune attack against cancer, she said.
