I agree Cooley is very valuable as a player in regards to blocking and helping the OL. I wouldn't say he is having a bad year, just an off year (better describes my opinion). He is a great asset but, IMO, having a good back up behind him does allow some room to move him.

Honestly though, I would be just as apt to go for trading Davis. He will have some value, not as much as Cooley, but his pass play abilities would get a little value (I would guess around a 4th round pick). I just don't think with all the upgrades we need, we should keep two starting caliber TEs on the roster unless they decide to go to two TE sets next season.

Yeah, I agree with you. I don't really even see the need for two tight ends that in my mind are both really solid players. I don't even look at it as Cooley having an off year. With how much of a unified team effort football is, when an entire offense is struggling it's rare for one player to continue to have great seasons. It's like expecting great games from running backs with no line. Put Cooley or Davis back in a well balanced and effective offense and I think they're both really good. But do we need 2 of those at tight end or would it be better to grab a mid/late round draft pick and draft another Brandon Banks type or an under valued receiver like Colston, who I think went in the 6th or 7th to New Orleans?
I hear you.....I am concered because we are limited in our number of picks this year (1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th)...not addressing the OL (our most glaring need) is risky. If the talent pool is limited with OL...then draft one in the 1st round at least. It is hard for me to watch our OL suck every game for us NOT to address it....but i will concede my point IF and only IF there are NO steller OL when we pick (other than LT). I believe we may fall right in the middle of the pack (10-21) because we can only get to 10-6 after winning the rest of our games........ok im done....just have to wait and see now.
i think we have six picks this year.

1st
2nd
5th
5th From Saints in Brown trade.
6th
7th

The Saints will get our 3rd pick for Brown and Eagles will get the 4th. Still not enough picks to build a team with young talent. Maybe if we can trade one or our TE's we could get a 3rd or 4th for one of them. Not many tradeable players on our team. IMO the only players that other teams may want are Cooley, Davis, Laundry, Orakpo, Trent Williams.

Looking at the upcoming crop of prospects, gotta say this is a down year for holding a top half 1st round draft pick. I see 1 great QB who probably wont come out. 2 really good CBs and 2 really good DTs(neither who would be NTs). Got 2 pretty good WRs...a pretty good DE outta Clemson. No top OL guys or RB prospects. A bunch of overrated UNC players coming out who have already been paid one way or another. I think Hightower the LB from Alabama or Pouncy the Guard for Florida are underrated....

What does everyone think? Bad year for talent? I see not alot of "wow" guys like I saw last year...I think it will be better to trade outta our position and grab mulitples picks, but I feel that way 75% regardless

I think your take sounds about right, but there could be a few good qb's in this draft & depending on how early the top 10 teams are willing to draft a qb, there could be Locker & Newton there in the teens. while I'm usually all for dropping back if possible, if Shan. sees a qb he likes this might be the year to do it.

Interior linemen, por favor. I'm in favor of Pouncey. As far as qb goes... I could be talked into Locker, dead set against Cam Newton. We could also end up trading a pick next year for a player like Flynn in GB, depending on what Shanahan wants to do. In that case, pick up a stud WR with the 1st, Center/Guard with the 2nd and fill needs with the rest.

why? character issues? spread O doesn't translate well to nfl?

I'm not sayin he's a sure thing, but he's an intriguing talent.

I think he has enormous upside. Everyone talks bad about him because of that scandal. He did have the best passer rating in college this year didn't he if I'm not mistaken? Not only is he extremely mobile but he has a good arm too. I'm not saying I'm enamored with him but he does have the capability of being a very good QB. That said I'm still sticking with trading for Orton and drafting a Mallet or Ponder type.

Also, let me be heard now. I know some people might knock him, but I would like to give Tyrod Taylor a hard look. I live in Richmond and see all the ACC games locally and he has really impressed me this year. Plus everyone I talk to says he is a leader in the locker room and a tremendously stand up character guy. Plus we could get him later in the draft. Thoughts?

I think we get something for Tryon, from the Colts. Probably there 7th.

I bet we'll get a real barn burned of a player with that pick.......................

the draft should be used for offensive help first,in the order of QB,RB,offensive line and WR.the defence could be shored up mainly through free agency.bottom line, more team SPEED is needed.

I'm a Hokie so I would love it if Tyrod got a look from skins scouts. I think it will come down (no pun intended) to his height. If he's under 6' (which I believe the combine will reveal that he is) I don't see many teams getting him to play qb. He is a solid all around guy, the type that Shanahan likes. I could see him playing wr, returning punts & having an ARE type role if nothing else.

I agree they should trade Fred Davis for a draft pick.the rookie TE Paulsen looks like he will be a good player down the road.another option for the draft is taking a RB like Kevin Williams from VT in 1st rd and a QB like Colin Kaepernick from nevada in the 3rd or 4th rd.he's big and fast too.:food-smil

Yeah, i think Davis may be our only tradeable commodity (and Cooley possibly, but i'd prefer not to think about it). I wouldn't expect we'd get more than a 4th, possibly a third if we're lucky. The guys got talent though.

They said the same thing about Drew Brees, and he's been a big disappointment hasn't he?
