Re: Danny Snyder Forces The Washington Post to Rename “Redskins Insider” to “Football Insider”
All of this to me leads back to what is a terribly ironic problem the Danny has; image. I say that because he has seemed to be disproportionately concerned w/his image to the extent that it's exacerbated his already poor public image. This from a guy who has a knack for marketing.
I wonder if part of it may be due to a lack of charisma, public confidence & media appeal. To contrast, you may hate Jerry Jones, but he's publicly accountable, confident in his speech & comfortable in his role as a public figure. Snyder just doesn't exude any of the above. In politics, it is rare these days that a congressman or other publicly elected major office holder is a poor public speaker (GW Bush is an exception). As an nfl team owner, DS doesn't have to have that same ability, but needs to realize he's as much a public figure. Not saying Snyder is a poor speaker per se, but he's not good at it & not comfortable w/it. That alone can't explain why people hate him. There are obvious reasons, such as our team's big payroll & small no. of wins in his tenure. But it's hard to ignore a respectable journalist like John Feinstein when he gives a detailed account of how the Danny has acted childishly. The suit against City Paper really makes it hard to side w/the Danny, even if the paper was questionable in some of its "facts." If you want to play w/the big boys you have to accept all that goes w/it. IMO the Danny could improve his image & the team by being more publicly accountable, and simply ignoring some of the criticism that comes his way. As an NFL owner if you can't handle criticism from the media, you probably are in for a tough time. It's not just about what DS supposedly did or didn't do, most fans aren't interested in looking into all his past actions, it's more about how he handles the spotlight. Sadly, through his reactions to the media, he comes across as petulant, insecure and petty more often than not. I certainly hope in his 'maturity' as an owner that he can become comfortable in his own skin & realize that people will actually respect him more if he stands by his decisions & doesn't worry about what the media reports about he & the team. |
Re: Danny Snyder Forces The Washington Post to Rename “Redskins Insider” to “Football Insider”
I see no problem with that piece to be honest with you, and really don't care as long as it's not negative. Cool, so "Dan" wants to make people think he's just one of the boys out having a beer with the cohorts. All good, no hating here. Do I think it's a PR move? Probably not, but I do think this part was included for a specific reason.
Not sure I'm reading this right, but are you saying the good he's done has outweighed the bad in terms of "what kind of person" he is? If so, that statement is laughable. There is no way in hell this guy has done enough good to atone for the bad he's done. So what he gives to charity, that's tax deductible and benefits him just as much as it does the recipients. Let me know when you see Dan volunteering his time at the local homeless shelter, food bank, or other various public needs. That said, what really matters in the end is that he stays clear the **** away from the football side of things. If Dan wants to be a douchebag and overcharge you guys out the ass, then fine by me. If Dan wants to make it so you can't walk onto the premises and have to pay his exuberant parking fees, fine by me. I dont' even care if he raises the beer costs to $25 a cup or $15 for a hot dog. That stuff doesn't matter to me. What does matter is that he stays away from football operations, and how he represents this organization. Like it or not, Dan Snyder IS the Washington Redskins. When the Redskins are trashed and viewed as dysfunctional, it's all because it starts at the top.
I love the fan that says he will not support the team by paying the high food and ticket prices but will watch the game on TV. You do know they make a hugh chunk of money off those TV deals. You must not attend any other pro sports events, concerts, etc.... because none of them are cheap and the prices at FedEx are in line if not lower then other events. Laugh at me I just paid $159 X 2=$318 for Jimmy Buffet tickets and that was a direct purchase from Ticketmaster. |
Re: Danny Snyder Forces The Washington Post to Rename “Redskins Insider” to “Football Insider”
There is a middle ground here. I have revisited this particular issue and i realize it is not as big of a deal as I thought. As for DS' past incidents arguments can be made. However, I do not think you can fault a guy for donating to charity or public work. That makes a real difference and it is not something he has to do. Give him credit where it is due.
I do agree that it would be great if DS took a backseat role with this team, but it is his money so he can do whatever he wants. I do not think, he needs to get involved with petty issues, however, like the City Paper incident. |
Re: Danny Snyder Forces The Washington Post to Rename “Redskins Insider” to “Football Insider”
Well I guess I'm dragging myself back into this. Snyder does a lot more than just donate his money and use of his private plane. The majority of charitable events the Redskins sponsor-food drives, park cleanup, playground renovation, etc-he's there helping out. I really don't know him very well myself and I have some bad stories, that most of you probably don't know about. But most people ibtak to who know him have nothing but good things to say about him as a person. He just doesn't that type of personality that conveys it. Do I wish some things were different? Sure. Who doesn't? But honestly, much of the hatred is based on speculation and ignorance to the world of sports ownership and the relation between sports teams and the media. What this thread is originally about is stuff that I've dealt with many many times over the past 15 years with leagues, teams, and even players. But it's understood that isn't brought up in public. Yet no one seems to say anything about the post's actions here. But again that's largely due to ignorance people have that this type of situation has never happened before. Call me an apologist if you want, but I'd rather be that then someone who compares protecting a brand with systematically executing dogs.
Im not going to stage a hunger strike to show my disgust towards him, nor am I going to do something just as irrational like not watch Redskins games…… But im not going to buy official Redskins gear (I love the old school and Chinese stuff on ebay), im not going to buy the things at games with huge profit margins like food and beer, and im not going to patronagize Johnny Rockets. Danny is still getting my money but im not just handing it over to him. |

I was kind of thinking that while reading through a bunch of the back and forths. Obviously all of the members who have been around here for a least a little bit have a lot of respect for all the mods and understand that theyre not just a bunch of assholes forcing their opinions on everyone. Not so much on the other forum. Its almost like the other forum and Danny have a lot in common…… much thanks to all the warpath moderators |
Re: Danny Snyder Forces The Washington Post to Rename “Redskins Insider” to “Football Insider”
Do you ever actually listen to ESPN 980, because if you did then you'd know that he's not controlling any criticism there. I think I mentioned a few months back that I was basically offered a job with the radio station (and some other Redskins media properties), and honestly, Dan Snyder had really nothing to do with it at all. He lets them do their thing, and doesn't prevent them from giving their opinion.

Re: Danny Snyder Forces The Washington Post to Rename “Redskins Insider” to “Football Insider”
i dont listen to 980. Im in Richmond and i think the programming is a little different and i have no idea if danny owns this territory too. I have heard 980 clips where he does get criticized though. Regardless it creates a conflict of interest especially considering the image danny has created and continues to create regarding his response to criticism. Maybe hes not overtly not allowing people to criticize him, but if he was my boss Im sure id feel the presence of a unspecified line. It leads towards fascism, maybe its just the American in me that doesn’t like it....

Although I do have my gripes with espn 980, The Sports Reporters are very critical of DS.

The Sports Reporters are almost TMZ-like with their criticism of the Redskins and Snyder. I actually don't listen to them because of that. I mean I don't mind them criticizing the team, but the show becomes a whining bitchfest. |
