We can use players like this. We cannot just over pay him, I agree on that. Give him a modest deal or a 3-4 year deal with pay escalators based on his play and performance.

exactly.. nobody is saying give J Johnson a 5-6 Mil a year contract. but a 3-4 Mil a year kr so contract is reasonable IF you think and expect him to be a possible starter. Lets be real here... if there is competetion for his or anyone elses services we desire sometimes you just may have to overpay a bit to obtain a player. i mean if all things and pay are equal would you come to the Skins if the Pats, Seahawks, Packers, Steelers or Colts were offering you comparable money?

if you think he has proven he deserves a middle level contract you are delusional. The guy has one play on his highlight video- the guy is a sleeper, who appears to be getting minimal interested- there is no reason to pay him $3 or $4 million a year.

What reliable source has indicated the Skins would over pay him? So far the contracts have been reasonable, and since BA has been here I think the Skins have made most if not all of their contracts within good salary cap management.

That said, if they put together a contract that has incentives and escalators that get him a number he will come here for, then his stats are far less important than the fact that he has been on a team that has incredible safety play and that Scot knows him from his rookie days and can evaluate how he has progressed.

Given our dearth of talent (maybe PT is an answer maybe not) at safety, bringing in a young player with upside for the right contract wouldn't be a bad thing. Might he be a dud, yes, but a well written contract protects the team from that. He might also be a capable safety who brings stability to the position and a well written contract provides him with the incentives to show it.

I don't see anything in J. Johnson's NFL history to suggest that he would help solve our starting safety problems. I'm fine with the idea of signing him to a modest contract for depth and ST help. I do like that the Skins are looking at secondary players who are good tacklers.

Perhaps the Skins should explore a trade for a safety.

Seattle slapped a second round tender on him last year as a RFA which entitled him to a salary of ~$2.2M although he restructured the deal. Bottom line, he was making close to 2.0M [I]last[/I] year. He is looking for a place to start b/c he has been stuck behind Chancellor/Thomas but I seriously doubt he is willing to take a pay cut to do so.

As I said, folks have been talking about him since before the market opened. Here is a good break down on him (from February):

Several twitter insider folks have been talking about this guy for a while and are now saying that several teams have an interest in him:

So, has he "proven he deserves a middle level contract"? I concede he has not done so by his play - [I]mainly b/c he has been stuck behind a couple of pro-bowlers[/I]. However, is he likely to get such a contract from someone based on his apparent reputation amongst the football people who are paid to know these things and appear to be interested in him according to the people who are paid to find out things from the football people.

If the Skins want to sign him, I would suggest it will have to be for a contract that is, at a minimum, in the $2-3M/year range and possibly approaching the $4M/year range with incentives. Bottom line, if Scot McC thinks he's worth it, I am more than good with it.

Maybe not if you look just at a stats list. If you look at what people paid to know stuff are saying, however, there is plenty out there to suggest he can be a solid NFL starter.

As with any other position, you decide what your next best option is and set a value on the player based on that. Taylor Mays is out there, no sign that he's a great player, but if the cost on Jeron Johnson gets to a certain point you simply pass and try Mays.

Nothing is black and white, that's where teams get into trouble and overpay. If after reading what I wrote above you're finding yourself thinking "but Jeron Johnson has promise to be an answer, Mays doesn't," then your thinking is still stuck in the Cerrato days of locking onto one player and overpaying to get him.

The approach should be the same as what McC has been doing, negotiate slowly. If the player gets your offer and immediately jumps to take it, you've offered too much. The offer should be one that he has to sleep on it and shop around. Then when he takes it, you know its a good deal. And if he doesn't take it then you move onto the next target. No paying A money for C players.

We passed on right tackles for this reason and for this reason landed two defensive lineman and a corner at favorable contracts.

Make a push for Johnson but be OK with it if he passes. There are other fish in the sea.
