Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
Yeah, no one wants someone to come in and destroy the organization. It's all a little premature head-banging though if you ask me.

Although we need to see more of Settle to really judge but hes been very good for his snaps. Drafting of Chase Young and Jonathan Allen seemed like no brainers, I dont give any credit there. Was hoping for Derwin James over Payne. But theres been some duds in mid rounds "where GMs prove their worth". I think this years surprise success came more form FA signings vs draft picks but they all play a part. I dont know how much Kyle Smith scouting went into the pro scouting as that was Santos job title. bottom line - I like Kyle Smith and this fan would make him GM, have heard people say hes sharp. We will see. |
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
I'd have put Moreland in bold too. For a 7th rounder to hold down the 3rd/4th CB spot is a pretty good find and I think he'll get better in this defense too.

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
Yeah, not counting 1st picks in the 1st round, here's my assessment of the last three drafts.
2018 - it was not good outside of Settle, period. Jury's still out on the 2019/2020 drafts in my opinion. 2019 - Pierschbacher and Brailford are no longer on the team. Harmon and Love have been injured. Martin sucks. Moreland, Sweat, Holcomb, and McLaurin have all been solid contributors. 2020 - Trey Quinn, Derrius Guice, and Shaun Dion Hamilton are no longer on the team. Apke, Christian, and Stroman have not been very good. Curl has been great. Gibson was coming on until that turf toe. Smith-Williams is likely the Kerrigan replacement. Can't call it yet for AGG, Ismael, Hudson, and Charles. They've picked some very nice players, and some that still need to show what they can offer. I wouldn't exactly say they've hit it out of the ballpark by any means. 7-8 players that have shown to be solid contributors in three drafts (outside the 1st picks in the 1st rounds). That's somewhere in the area of 30-35%... |
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
Outstanding job by Kyle Smith in the draft. The free agency this past spring was another pretty good job as well being it was the first time without Bruce doing retard shit like making Landon Collins the highest paid safety in the league.

Btw the only time they’ve gone to the playoffs recently was under his guidance. |

I don't know that I would declare the last three drafts as outstanding (unless you are comparing it to previous Redskins draft classes). My guess is they are more likely on par with the majority of the league as far as the percentage of players selected that have shown to be solid contributors. |
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
I'd be interested to know how much input Ron and some of the other coaches had in the draft last year. Hard to imagine he sat back and had zero say in things.

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
Ravens had a hell of a 2018 draft .. was this Ozzie last draft or their new guys first?
32 QB Lamar Jackson (mvp) 83 LT Orlando Brown (pro bowl) -- we took project tackle Christian 8 spots earlier FML 86 TE Mark Andrews (pro bowl) |

I think he had a lot of input. His mantra with regard to players is they must have versatility. You can see that in the 2020 picks. Charles can play tackle and guard, Ismael can play all three interior O-line positions, Hudson had experience at Safety, CB, LB, and Edge rusher in College, Gibson is a hybrid WR/RB, Curl can play CB and Safety, Gandy-Golden is described as a swiss army knife... |
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
I think the main thing everyone can agree on is we want Kyle Smith retained. It would be a major blow to see him leave and thrive elsewhere.
Regardless of who gets named official GM, I think Smith has at least earned some time here to work with Ron and prove his worth. And maybe eventually become GM. I like the idea of hiring an experienced GM and promoting Smith to Asst. GM where he can learn the ropes. Except by doing that, you most likely have to be ready to release/promote him within the next 3 years, after he's learned enough. |
