I can understand their thought process where Portis is concerned. The guy has guaranteed money owed to him, from a financial standpoint it wouldn't make a lot of sense for him to sit at home and collect millions. May as well get what's left out of him and hope it's enough to help win some games. |
Re: Updated: Redskins Make Major Roster Cuts
I was one that didn't really care if Portis stayed or left, but now he is undoubtedly our number one back. Just get used to it. For the most part Portis is a professional on Sundays.
Yeah, he's got some baggage or whatever but with Betts and Rock gone, hopefully Portis will see that it's all on him and Jason. I'm pretty confident he'll rise to the occasion. We know that Jason is the consumate professional. I don't know about you guys, but I'm getting excited about training camp already. Isn't that just sad. |
Re: Updated: Redskins Make Major Roster Cuts
I dont wanna be a buzz kill, but if we have a complete overhaul, at most we will probably win 8 games, which is still a huge improvement, but i know after 1 win this season people are gonna be talking super bowl.

This is exactly what Allen did in Tampa...cut overpaid vets, brought in 19 new younger and cheaper, but good players...went to the Super Bowl. I have faith in him, he's won in this league before. I'm thrilled that Collins was cut. ARE also, but I didn't think it would actually happen. I am not really surprised at any of them. We should have traded Betts in 2007 when his value was peaking. Randy Thomas should really follow in Samuels' footsteps and retire while his health is intact. Smoot is just finished. All of the players have been great Redskins and I'm proud of what they've done in the past, but these moves are necessary. We have stuck with the same core for many years and haven't improved. Blowing it up after a 4-12 season is our best bet to return to success. |

I said this a few months ago, but a five/six game swing is not uncommon these days. It's completely reasonable to believe the Redskins could go 10-6. But I do like the fact that we're younger now. I mean, if you going to get tossed around at least do it with some youth and an eye towards the future. |

The past decade for the most part has been a failure, I don't think people are going to mind if we take a step back in the short run in order to let the new regime get their plan cranking. After winning 4 games last year, I would be pretty happy with 8-8. |

A lot of people around here were iffy on Bruce Allen when he first got here, but it's apparent in the first couple of days that there's been a regime change around here. It's all about process, process, process. I love it! On another note, I wouldn't be surprised to see Jake Delhomme get a look here if he doesn't sign somewhere else. |
Re: Updated: Redskins Make Major Roster Cuts
itll be interesting to see how we fill the holes we created yesterday. We do not appear to be going after the "top-tier" players in a weak free agent class and we only have 5 draft picks. so, what's our plan to fill the holes with players that could be considered upgrades?

Maybe there are a lot of guys who will be available who just haven't been released yet. |

He's not much of a force anymore. He constantly dinged up and now its worse since he's one hard shot to the head away from really having problems. The other player who should also have been let go is Sellers. He's a 1 trick pony (that doesnt even do that trick so great anymore) that also has fumble problems. |

Allen stated yesterday that "ownership has not put a spending limit on us"...yet we're not going out and immediately paying everyone more than they're worth. As I suspected, Vinny WAS the source of the issue, yet Snyder took most of the blame because he signed the checks. I know Snyder was the meddling, fantasy football-minded owner in the early years, but I truly believed he's learned from his mistakes and moved on from his stereotype around the league and media. Allen and Shanahan are in total control of the show. Firing Vinny will prove to be the best thing Snyder EVER did, even if he did it a few years late. |

Well, we didn't really cut any 16 game contributers to begin with. I think more than anything we're hoping that our young wideouts, a healthy Portis, and a solid draft will plug many, if not all of those holes. And considering we'll be playing some 3-4 now, Griffin was simply expendable at his age and with the wear and tear. You have to figure that resigning Zoe Alexander was also big part of cutting Griffin. |

He would definitely not be our starter anyways. Pennington IS reportedly on the radar. I'd prefer to build up the line and RB/LB through the draft without picking a QB, keep Campbell starting, pick up a solid backup like Pennington and continue to let Brennan develop. I just can't trust him as the backup YET and really think Colt's career ceiling is "quality backup", not a starter...but at this point, Colt is still our backup of the future. |
Re: Updated: Redskins Make Major Roster Cuts
Well for people who are talking the concussion issue about Portis, keep in mind that Brian Westbrook was 3 times the back Portis was, and it was concussion concerns that ended his eagles career, and possibly his football career.
|
Re: Updated: Redskins Make Major Roster Cuts
Alexander is going to be playing OLB so I'm not sure how much his re-signing had to do with Griffin being released. I think they value Daniels more since he can play inside and out and he will of course come cheaper than Griffin.

I disagree with that. CP was a top-5 back also. The difference between the backs was that Westbrook was his team's only offensive weapon for years...of course he piled up the stats. He wasn't the blocker or runner that Portis was, but was a superior receiver...but then again Andy Reid passes more than any offense in the NFL. Westbrook was never a reliable back, he was annually only good for 12-13 games. He was injury-prone for many issues other than concussions. I'll admit, Westbrook was a force WHEN on the field, but that was his main weakness, staying healthy. |

True. I pointed out Zoe staying because he's versatile and we'll probably see him line up inside occasionally. |

If he's going to be dropping more weight to play OLB I can't see him inside, he played at 275 last year so he's already too light. |

CP would've been my first cut. He's going to complain and cry like he always does so I'm not sure why they're keeping him around. He's just not worth it anymore. I'd go out and sign Thomas Jones (who is a real professional) and draft a scat back in the later rounds. There is simply no reason to keep CP. |

If he's lining up inside at 250 or 260, yeah that's thread worthy |

I am happy that at least we don't have the F.O. saying "We have a playoff roster". Our o-line was the obvious glaring weakness and they are focusing on the line. What's not to like? It just sucks that there isn't a premier o-lineman out there but we are doing the best we can with the hand we are given. |

I was thinking that the signing of Clifton gives us a lot more flexibility in that if Bradford does fall to us in the first and we end up with a project tackle in the draft, like Ducasse, then we can possibly give them experience at RT before we try our hand at LT. Then if that doesn't seem to be working out we can draft a LT with our first rounder next year. :FIREdevil Oh and besides guys the tackle class next year looks much better, this years class is the weakest tackle class like you know like ever. Better yet lets use a mid round pick to find a franchise LT. I'm pretty sure we'll be able to manage that. We can draft him right after our 5th round franchise QB :FIREdevil :D |

I also wonder that Clifton is insurance in case we lose out on both Bradford and Okung. I also wonder if you could move Clifton or Pashos to RT if we land Okung? |

Could be. There's a very good chance we could miss out on BOTH of them and end up drafting a top defensive player we just can't pass up...or trading down. I was also wondering if Clifton or Okung could move to RT? Other than Dockery, we need to upgrade the whole line. |

Clifton would make a nice RT. I think thought that the main reason we like him now is aside from his reputation he's spent the last few years in a zone blocking scheme. Unfortunately my favorite project Daryn Colledge got a second round tender from Green Bay. Oh well. |

Re: Updated: Redskins Make Major Roster Cuts
I like this huge dumpoff so nescessary.
I agree with everyone we chose to let go... and let stay so far. Ill miss a few... Cartwright, Randle El, Thomas, Griffin... they were solid Skins. But Its a new day. |
Re: Updated: Redskins Make Major Roster Cuts
It might be a tad bit dangerous, but I think we should draft BOTH of our tackles in the draft. Okung and Veldheer are just a beast of a tandem, and its definitely within the realm of possible. If the FO is serious about making this team younger and better, then our first two picks in the draft should be OT's, and then pick up Pike to backup Campbell for a year. We'll see what happens, but I do hope we draft Okung. Our line with him, Veldheer and a decent guard p/u in FA would go from god awful to above average. A nice turnaround for one offseason.

Randy Thomas - No ARE - Probably Collins - Probably Smoot - Probably Mason - No Grif - Yes |
Re: Updated: Redskins Make Major Roster Cuts
dont count randy out yet. he tore his other bicep this year so its not like he had a re-occurring injury.
plus he said he knew he might be cut but has prepared himself for another season, which i assume means he has stayed in playing shape and will make a go of it with someone. |

Smoot, yeah probably. Griffin, probably unless he decides to retire. Thomas if he's 100% might get a shot somewhere as a backup. Perhaps an August signing if somebody is desperate. Betts might get a call if he's healthy. |

Not sure how that can be dangerous...more like the solid move. Right now we have 0 legit LTs on the roster and 1 RT who I think will struggle mightily in the zone blocking scheme. WE NEED YOUNG, LEGIT OT TALENT more than anything you could possibly imagine. |
