That is 100% correct.
The surgeon took out the middle section of the patella tendon below the kneecap, most likely from RGIII's left knee, because they probably already harvested his right patella back at Baylor. You can only harvest a patella once. This graft includes the strip of tendon, along with attached plugs of bone on each side and make an ACL out of it.
For this reason ACL surgery is sometimes referred to as an ACL patellar-tendon-bone graft. This is the best technology/procedure to date for torn or partially torn ACL's.
Back in the early 80's Dr. Stanford Lavine (Redskins orthopedist at the time) re-attached my ACL when I partially tore my ACL skiing. It only lasted about 8 years before I completely tore it playing football. They no longer reattach or stitch ACL's back together anymore because it does not work long term for athletes. If you are a sit on the couch lazy bitch then it might be ok. If you have a partial ACL tear you should do a patella graft if you want to play sports at a high level. Period.
Since my patella graft my knee went back to normal, way stronger and more stable then the first surgery (reattachment). The diffrence was night and day.
I did however have some small issues with my patella tendon, but my Physical Therapist helped me strengthen my patella and no issues since.

Regarding the guy that said scope his knee just to make sure all was ok... NOO! You only scope unless you absolutely have to, like fluid build up and pain/discomfort that can effect your play. Yes, scoping a joint is a minor procedure, but an MRI can see everything including inside structures that your eye through a scope and an HD monitor can not see. The new MRi technology is amazing.
RGIII, barring any setbacks big or small, will play week 1.
HE is a franchise player unlike any other player on our team, so the rules are different for him than say an Orakpo or anyone else on our team. If he has even a slight issues with his knee leading to week one, let him rehab. It ain't worth the risk. We need a healthy RGIII for December and January, not first week of September. Plus Kirk's cousin looks pretty good so far. He ain't some piece of shit second stringer. I think we can win with him, he might be special as well. .

I'm getting tired of the the media hype sourrounding RG3 and his knee. Between the adidas tv ad, his dad talking to the media, all doctors and media that can't stop talking and now this??? I just hope he plays well and his knee holds up...

I hear what you are saying, and a part of me has the same gut reaction, but I have to admit that it is pretty amazing as a Skins fan to have a spotlight on our qb, simply because he has all the characteristics of a superstar. Yes, he needs to hold up on the field, and yes he has to play well, but this guy has so far managed all the various pressures perfectly, imo. I am not sure if it was a tweet, or an article that I saw, where Griffin basically said, Look, as long as my teammates aren't offended, then let the media have it's day, but if they (his teammates) start being put off by it, he will end it. Seemed like a very mature response.

Defensewins is right. They no longer repair ACLs since ligaments and tendons receive so little blood flow that the repair takes forever to heal and is weak at that. They just replace it leaving the bone caps to heal in place. Much better technique than in the past. It's why it used to take 2 years to "come back" and now it takes less than a year. It comes down to how fast your bones heal and how diligent and careful you are during recovery to keep the joint as in-shape as possible. Most of the recovery is spent ensuring the joint is restrengthened and suitable to protect the ligaments going forward.

Sure I am excited but lets remember RGIII really has not won anything a this point. I think the media is crowning this guy a little to soon as the next best thing.

I think he has done great so far and the sky is the limit but lets see him win a Super Bowl or have a string of great seasons before saying he is the best.

It's not only the media stuff, it's like everytime he does a press conference, he has to throw his coach under the bus with his comments about being out on the field. I think he should be out there playing too, and practicing full go. But the coach doesn't want him to so respect that and just shut up. He's already shown he can't be trusted. Instead he has to constantly throw little jabs at Shanahan. I love RG3, but lately I've been seeing a little diva in him.

Same offense but just lining up in the pistol a lot of the time, I guess that's what throws people off in thinking it's a new offense.

He's no different than most great players from any sport. He knows he's the man and he wants to be out there. I like that he's chomping at the bit.
