The only player on the list of players they lost worth mentioning was Keenan Lewis and Mike Wallace. Wallace was not worth the amount. Hampton and Harrison were old and done... Remember how they were going to struggle after losing Joey Porter? I don't think anyone in Pitt remembers Joey Porter. Starks was getting old and didn't look good this entire year. I am sure they will be fine. Baltimore has the potential of losing half of their defense and Cincy is in it. I like Cincy. I just think they will always be an almost team. The only concern for Pitt that I have is if they can keep Big Ben healthy. If he stays healthy they will have a shot at a superbowl. They are just that team that when you forget about them (like the Giants) they end up winning a superbowl or making a playoff run. |

I agree with Atlanta/Green Bay and New England. Houston is a team who is losing key guys, but they'll adjust (has anyone posted that Ed Reed is supposed to meet with Houston tomorrow?), because they draft well. This Indy team is going to be interesting with all these FAs and young draft picks. |

Anything can happen, that is why I am not going to count out Pitt. Any team with an elite QB has a chance for a superbowl. Indy lost an important receiver in Avery, and I am not so sure about the coaching situation. They just seemed to be the typical overachiever and feel good story and I don't think they will have a consistent winning team. But we will see. Plus the colts are making a lot of noise right now. A lot of changes sometimes is not always a good thing. Should be interesting with Houston. Schaub is still there which makes me question them but most people were questioning Flacco all the way to the superbowl. |

Their running game got better with Dwyer and Redmen. Jason Worilds was a beast at VA. Tech and he will step in for Harrison and they won't miss a beat. Steelers always have a drafted guy that's ready to take over for an older vet that's on his way out. |

Good teams usually have players who haven't had much playing time, but who the coaches believe will be ready to step into a role. I expect both Pitt and Baltimore to have those guys on their roster, and I think the Skins may finally be getting to that place too. Just because a guy doesn't beat out an all-pro who is established on the roster doesn't mean that he won't be able to become an all-pro in his own right. |
Re: Around the NFL Free Agency Thread 2013
If the Giants get a first for Cruz it will be a good deal for them, yes Cruz is a great wideout but when you think of how the Giants took an undrafted free agent and turned him into a Pro Bowler worth a first round pick it speaks to one of the things you are doing right as an organization.
With all that said I would be remiss if I didn't say F Mara and the Giants, stupid a-holes, not only getting rid of 36 million of our cap money, but for turning an undrafted free agent into a player worth a first round pick.
That's one way to look at it, the "profit" from flipping Cruz. However, how do they replace his production? Even if they use that 1st-round pick on a WR, that's a position with probably the highest rate of draft busts. Cruz has become one of the most productive WRs in the game and you don't just plug-and-play with that caliber of a player. They really screwed themselves by paying both Eli and the often-injured and less productive than Cruz WR named Nicks. They can't afford to pay both Nicks AND Cruz #1 WR money and they both demand it. Cruz is likely leaving NJ. I believe the teams around the league have been waiting for Wallace, Jennings and Welker's deals to be done before moving onto Cruz who might take a little more money because they'll have to outbid the Giants, but with their cap situation, it can be done. The Giants can get big value for Cruz...BUT they can't replace him on the field. |

Interesting. |
Re: Around the NFL Free Agency Thread 2013
Just a little late on that news, bud.
The Colts are making some great moves, especially in the secondary, that's 3 solid DBs signed. Landry is a great player when healthy. I think they'll really regret the 4 years though. I'm glad someone overpaid so we were priced out of the risk. I loved LaRon when he was here but it was just an experiment that failed and it wouldn't be wise to try it again. I don't know if we'll ever see another season like he had last year, playing all 16 games. Interesting how he could never get on the field here, but when he was playing for a contract, suddenly he's healthy. I'd love to see him on the field for us again but the risk that once paid he'll go back to the old LaRon is just too high. What we need now are safeties who can stay healthy. We already have a similar situation with Meriweather. We've seen what happens when we're playing 2nd and 3rd-string safeties as starters...please, not again. We need to get some of these CBs in FA...there's a TON of quality CBs available. Then in the draft...hit the safety positions hard. |
Re: Around the NFL Free Agency Thread 2013
I missed the last page; past my bed time. Anywho good luck to the Colts.

Re: Around the NFL Free Agency Thread 2013
14 million for Landry? Not sure what Indy was thinking on that one. He's a good player but he gets exposed in coverage. But good for him. Glad he's been able to stay healthy and get paid.

4 years / $20 mil. We couldn't compete with that. The same link shows that SD also picked up our former draft pick Chad Rhino. |

I think they have a 2-3 year window before the cap bites them in the ass. They'll have to resign Sherman/Wilson and other players they currently have. |

Vikings getting visits from Greg Jennings and Brian Urlacher. If they could steal those two away from division rivals, that would be impressive. Sure they're old and breaking down, but when on the field, still very good players.

Re: Around the NFL Free Agency Thread 2013
Color me the eternal optimist, but I think this cap penalty is going to wind up being a great thing for the Redskins. They're going to have to continue developing guys they already have into starting material. Use what you already have and hopefully develop them into solid starters. Look to the draft to fill out the roster.
It sucks to let certain players go we all feel have the potential at being great players in the league, but the team won - mostly - without Fred Davis, and they can continue to win without him. I'd much rather have him here, but sometimes you have to take your medicine and let go of the things you can't afford. I believe if the Redskins are able to make it back to the playoffs this year, even more so if they do it by also winning the division again, then it will be even easier for the 'skins to completely let go of the ideology that you have to make the big name signing during free agency to properly fill holes on your roster. The 'skins have done a much better job since Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan has taken over, but I think this is something they needed to face to keep their focus on player development. |

I don't think it's a bad thing as long as it's managed correctly....adding a piece here and there. But no one has ever won in the NFL loading up on free agents. Philly, Buffalo and Tampa Bay are the latest to learn the hard way. Our defense was/is made up of a lot of free agents and it's a bottom tier unit. |

Re: Around the NFL Free Agency Thread 2013
It just doesn't add up..
We lose Polumbus who by all accounts was dreadful last year and we decide to take a flyer on Pashos (who spurned us three years ago) and Trueblood who was even worse in 2011 than Polumbus was in 2012. Not to mention we have a young guy like Crompton who by all accounts is expected to hold down the fort at some point in time. THEN, you have the CB/S position. We lose Hall and Madieu, who weren't exactly stars, but they played 16 games for us and started. What are the answers? Nothing. There's just got to be something planned here, because historically we have never gone into a training camp with unproven players and draft picks to fill out a position. Shanny has always brought in veteran competition. And so we wait.. |
Re: Around the NFL Free Agency Thread 2013
Well, I think it's best man win between Compton Pashos and Trueblood, my money is on Compton. CB/S is where the cap hit has hurt us the past two years, and I doubt there is much more planned except to see what shakes out of the tree as draft picks and 1st ballot FA's(guys signed the first week of FA) are signed. So we will either go with youth, or 2nd tier in those areas. It's either a blessing that there is seemingly a lot of quality out there both in FA and the draft, or if we can't get any, a curse because next years group may not have the same overall talent level.

My money is on Pashos. When healthy in 2011, he was the 6th best OT in terms of PBE. Trent was 19th last year.. So yeah high praise for Tony. Anyways again how does a CB depth chart of, Wilson, Crawford, Murphy suffice? Quarterbacks will have us highlighted in 6 different colors on their schedules. We'll get shredded. |
