I wouldn't be a big fan of this move...its gonna be a big number. Rather pay Muhammed Wilkerson or make a move for him
Cut Andre Roberts if cap room is needed, just get it done!
pretty sure we haven't cut roberts because he's still injured and that's a thing. at least last i heard. as far as norman, he is a great player, and even if we have to cut a player like culliver to make room, it's an upgrade. if you're a team, you would want to know why he was cut though. i mean, if the panthers found out he's about to get a 16 game suspension for peds, well... that's important information. i assume anything like that would have already leaked from the nfl offices by now. |

I just don't think McC is gonna go crazy with the number Norman wants. Culliver would be cut imo, Kory L too. Roberts when healthy. What do you think gets it done? IMO, Norman looking around 70-80 million with at least 60% of that guaranteed. |
Re: NFL Free Agency 2016
The Redskins should have enough money to sign Norman. Cutting Roberts and Culliver could save over $10 million. It is hard to determine Culliver's contract due to the escape clause.
I doubt they can sign Norman for less than $75 million for 5 years... to much for me |
Re: NFL Free Agency 2016
I really like Culliver. Wish he didnt suffer a major knee injury.
I imagine we could squeeze Norman into this year's cap but does that mean for future years we cant re-sign Kirk or Reed or DJax? At 29 and him wanting a ton of money, I would pass on Norman. |
Re: NFL Free Agency 2016
Why is a player wanting to get a good open market deal in the NFL such a pariah? NFL teams are always looking to get the best player for the least amount of committed money. And NFL teams always back out of their contracts for money reasons. I just don't get that mindset.
Anyway, I don't know if the Redskins should go after Norman. I mean, we are in a division with elite WRs like Dez and OBJ. I think a Norman/Breeland CB tandem would be ridiculous and it'd make a huge difference. We already should have a very good pass rush with Kerrigan, Galette, and Preston Smith. I think our defense would improve by leaps and bounds with Norman. That said, I trust what Scot will do in the end. If we don't get him, it wouldn't be the end of the world. |
Re: NFL Free Agency 2016
Ruhskins, good post. There was actually some football thinking in there, rather than the dumbass kneejerk reaction that brands this a "Vinny" move.
My whole thing is so many Redskins fans used to be in favor of buying up mad free agents. Now it seems the other way, so many fans are against it without going through some real football thinking - oh we tried the free agency approach with Vinny, it doesn't work, blah blah blah. Truth is somewhere in between, and it's based upon your circumstances. One of the two best WRs in the entire NFL plays in our division (OBJ). Dez Bryant is still a monster, when healthy still among the very best. And don't get me wrong, I don't think Scot should just hand over whatever it takes to sign Norman blindly without thinking of the value. If he's uncomfortable with the guaranteed money it would take to sign Norman, then I'm OK with that. But the reason I'm OK with that is because I trust that he has thought through the opportunity cost of using that money on Norman - I trust that he has a plan to put together a team in a better way. I don't think many of you guys who are having the kneejerk 'no Vinny no!' reaction have really thought it through. Norman can have an incredible impact on our defense. Have you looked at our cap situation for 2017, 2018? Can you tell me why having Norman can't work? Have you done the math to say we can't afford to sign Cousins long term and Reed and others with Norman on the roster? I don't think you have. I also don't think you're thinking about the impact it would make to have Breeland as our #2 instead of our #1. Are you thinking about the schematic differences that Barry could deploy with Norman playing on an island? Are you thinking about the blitzes and the disguises? Are you thinking about the turnovers that could be created when Galette/Kerrigan and Norman/Breeland work hand-in-hand? Don't get on the boards and spew knee jerk bullshit. We should be better than that. Make your case and make it a good one or I just scroll by. |

He'll want to sell him - Josh if you're looking for a destination that will pay you the absolute most, then you've got the wrong place. We'll pay you fairly, we'll pay you like one of the best corners, but I have to know why you want to be a Washington Redskin. I have to know if you're like Junior Galette, that you're a football junkie, that you're all heart and passion, that you want to be in a place where culture matters. That's where McCloughan separates himself as a GM. The emotional connection he makes. He not only identifies heart in potential draft picks, but he relates to it in conversations too. If Norman ends up in San Fran or Tampa for the highest $, then you'll know he wasn't a McCloughan fit. If he ends up with us for market value, $14-15M per season or so, then watch out, because it says McCloughan saw the heart he needed to see. |
Re: NFL Free Agency 2016
I think Norman is a heck of a baller...but he is more Sherman than Revis.
Not a press guy and doesn't follow the #1 WR around the field. He stays on his side and is in mostly in zone looks... Carolina sits in Cover 3 (zone) half the time...why? because the team plays great team defense. Still, Norman is the real deal on reading routes and anticipating where the QB will go. He is super aggressive. Love the player...but a real big, top-3 pay in Corner pay, im not down with that. |

Im not sure if he can be sold...I really think he wants big big money, because in his mind its "disrespectful" if he doesn't get it. Remember when we use to say "diva" WR, well the new "divas" these days are the cornerbacks. Brash, bold and unapologetic. Why? Because as the league has become more pass oriented....anybody can put up big WR receiving yards or pass catches, but not everybody can stop it. And when you can, you're more recognized as a star. |
Re: NFL Free Agency 2016
No farging way do I want this guy.
Our cap would be fecked. We can get a good corner in the first round and then release Culliver. |
Re: NFL Free Agency 2016
The Redskins should do their due diligence but I would pass. At 28 how many years will Norman be playing like he did last year? I never even heard of the guy prior to the 15 season. It would have to be most likely a 3 year rental/deal. I would say go do your homework and find another Josh Norman in the middle rounds of the draft, like Carolina did. They know him better than anyone and they let him walk right out the door. They must think they can still be just as good w/out him.
The only way I'd pay a corner that kind of money is if he's in the Deion Sanders or Darrell Green mode. He would need to follow the teams best wr and take him out of the game. Not sure if Norman is that guy. |

Re: NFL Free Agency 2016
we have what? 11-12m in free space now and the rookies will take 5-6m of that. kory is 3-3.5, riley is 4, roberts is 3-4, culliver is 5.5 if you cut them.
i mean, it's possible to get him, but we have cousins, reed, jackson, galette, and possibly baker coming up on money years, so it's hard to see us being able to add 15m per and keep more than a couple of those guys. it's not like his agent doesn't know that either, whereas SF has over 50m free this year and next among other teams. trying to sell him on emotion is cool and all, but getting paid is generally what's key, and we're at a real disadvantage there. |

Re: NFL Free Agency 2016
We can cut culliver, coming off an injury for no penalty and save 9.25 so I definitely sign Norman for a net 6.75 more all day long.
Think of the glorious theater it would be twice a year against OBJ. |

Re: NFL Free Agency 2016
i'm not against getting him, i just think expiring contracts on key players and limited cap room are really working against us here. keeping kirk/jackson/reed together is pretty important.
|
Re: NFL Free Agency 2016
That Guy you're good with the cap. Make your way over to overthecap, pull up next year, start adding back the players you want, and add Norman in there for a hit of 10M or so.
You'll find it's quite workable. |

Norman went to high school in South Carolina.
That makes him an east coast boy. That may make DC more attractive to him. |

Keim thinks that if Redskins land Norman, they'll be more likely to trade down from #21 pick.

Re: NFL Free Agency 2016
There are good free agents like Janoris Jenkins, who can be a cog on a defense. And then there are absolute game changing players. Norman is one of those. It's not at all unlike JJ Watt or Khalil Mack hitting the market. You don't ask questions, you just do what you can to get them. I made the exact same argument with Jackson.
Scot knows. This is not your typical free agent. You just make the move and figure out the cap situation later. |

He's had one good year. Do you throw a ton of cash at a guy who's not shown much? Does he fit our system like he did with the Panthers? I'm not for the signing, but it is what it is. |
Re: NFL Free Agency 2016
I would also lean towards not signing him as well. Just don't think he is worth the money he'll be asking for.
