Re: How far can Beck take us?
You're thinking of the Eagles. MS had a win now approach last year when he wasted picks on McNabb. If he had the same mentality this year, we would be throwing picks at the Bengals for Palmer.
We'd probably have Nnamdi and Holmes...with a ton of holes in the roster. (sounds like Philly) |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
I just think if the organization wants to win now, and it looks like they do, then they should go out and try and sign Bulger. He was the best FA out there and he's better than anyone we currently have.
I'm not sure what this organization wants to do anymore. I'm sure they want to win now (doesnt every team) since they havent won anything in a loooong time. It a win now league so its time they start winning. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
Win now? This team?
Seems like they're trying to build for the long haul if you ask me. Sure they're bringing in free agents, but they're all in the 25-28 range and ready for their prime years. The Eagles are in win now mode. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
It does appear like we're entering the building stage, I only hope that we get 5 years to do it and the rug doesn't get pulled out from under Shanny too soon.

I think we are in a tough division this year and with a new quarterback and lots of new pieces the season could be expected to get off to a rough start. I would be reasonably pleased if we got to 8-8 this year, anything above that is a bonus in my opinion. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
I think this year with so many new pieces in place, we might see them struggle early on. Could be one of those years where the record isn't a good indicator of how good the team really is. 7-9 maybe?

I think we will struggle due to the schedule, not the new players. :P It's brutal. |

I actually wish the Redskins would have done last offseason, what they are doing this offseason. But yeah, I think we are building for the future. None of the signings we've had could be interpreted as "win-now". |

Yeah, but last year they didn't have the cap room they do now, and free agency was pretty limited. And obviously circumstances changed when DM didn't work out. They did do a good job at cleaning things up cap wise for this year knowing they could really make a splash at building a young core for the future. |

If they were TRULY building for the future then they would not have signed all these guys. They would've drafted a bunch of guys, which they did, and then let them play, like Tampa Bay did last year. They started two rookies at wr and found a stud RB off the waiver wire. Now those guys have game experience. Armstrong gets game experience and then has to fight for a job cause Shanahan likes a career journeymen Jabar Gaffney. It's like we always try and get other peoples players right when they're entering their prime, or past their prime instead of drafting our own guys, letting them play together and let them enter their primes together. I'll say it again, bringing in a lot of other teams players doesn't work. The good teams get free agents here and there to mix in with establised core players. I like some of the guys they signed, but I question whether a guy like Cofield will fit in here. Hopefully he will. |

Are we looking at the same schedule? 2011 Strength of Schedule - NFL Nation Blog - ESPN |

Unfortunately they havent really built much because they have given away their building blocks (draft picks) as a way of doing business. The days of building for the long haul are over because players and coaches just dont stick around long enough to really build anything. I'm hoping Shanny & Allen can change the culture of giving away draft picks the Skins have developed as a way of doing business. |

Granted it is just only one off-season, but haven't they shown that they did that this off-season? Not only we signed players that were not high-profile, we also acquired draft picks, which was never heard of in Redskins for last decade. We are definitely building a team for long haul, no question about it. I actually feel much better about drafting a QB next year, if Rexy or Beck didn't turn out the way Redskins hoped. The reason why I'm feeling better is we are creating a team where it would be good scenario for a rookie QB to jump in. |

2011 Strength of Schedule - NFL Nation Blog - ESPN
We play the Giants(2), Iggles(2), Boys(2), Cards, Rams, Panthers, Bills, 49ers, Dolphins, Seahawks, Jets, Patriots, and Vikings strength of schedule aside, that's not an easy schedule by any definition, especially for a team that finished 6-10. |

A team that was known for giving away draft picks clearly was never in build for the long haul mode. |
