IMO, the ideal time to trade Trent would be prior to the opening of FA. It would be beneficial to know that we have an additional $12.5M in cap space for FA.
I think for the same reason the teams trying to trade want to know whether they need to be in on a FA tackle or not, so I would think it happens before FA starts or around the draft

I just wish the Redskin’s would really clean house and TRADE MOSES. He had a terrible 2019 season and we might get a PB & J sandwich for him - but more importantly we could use his cap money for a FA replacement and draft for OT and perhaps see if Martin can take that spot. He’s on my poop list.

I think the TW mess affected Scherff and Moses' play. They both had a real down year. I would rather get that side settled then add RT to the needs.

Martin is a guard, not going to take over Moses' spot and produce even close to the same result.

Yup, you’re right. The Trent Williams problem may take awhile to resolve a decent trade, PLUS then finding a replacement which may involve a number of avenues. I agree that Martin is probably not good enough for RT although I’d like to see him there in the preseason to try. The other channels to fill LT will be hiring an OT FA (low cost), then drafting at least one OT in the draft, plus more in UDFA. The idea is to see if one rookie can start or be a close backup to the FA we sign and maybe start later in the season.

Likely they’ll give Moses this season to improve or be drafting for more OT in next year’s draft to replace him. They’ll also drop Christian this PS as he is obviously NOT the solution to replace Trent, Moses or even be a viable backup.

Re: Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2020

The original post was updated to reflect the Redskins tagging Brandon Scerff with the non exclusive franchise tag, meaning he carries a cap hit of $16.1M (I previously had it counting as $14.5M which I think I got from last year’s numbers, so this update lowered the expected remaining cap room by $1.6M.)

They still have a good chunk of space available going into FA and they can create more by locking Scherff up to a long term deal which would lower his tag number.

salary cap also looks like it will be lower than expected

ESPN article says it's going up about 10 million this season.

This should jump in 2021 with new TV deals now that the CBA is through 2030 (my own assumption).

Although Cooper and Byron Jones May be available from the Cowboys in FA, I just don’t see the Redskins biting for either one.
Why not? Because both are going to be Uber-expensive.

The Redskins have already franchise tagged Scherff for $16.1 mill.
Although there are many suitors for TE Hooper, I predict the Redskins will WIN the bidding war for him. He’s the REDSKIN’s #1 target for 2020 FA!!That’s another $11 mill.
Then they want to sign Flowers - $4-6 mill.

For CB, I think Rivera will go for old Redskin’s Breeland AND Fuller. FS - ex-Panther Boston. For LB - Schobert from Cleveland.

For OT and WR #2 and TE#2 I think that Rivera will see if Kyle Smith can draft our way out of these holes on the team. Whatever we get for Trent Williams-whether a second or two thirds, plus our actual third rounder will go toward getting an OT, TE and WR.

For OT, the team will use the philosophy of throwing lots of jello on the wall to get something to stick - regarding getting getting a rookie OT to start. We will draft a bunch of OT’s, especially in UDFA , to get a winner and a project or two. Penn will be let go. Christian will be let go. TE in the draft is the backup to Hooper. WR in the draft will compete with Harmon.

I don't know about the likelihood of that, cuz none of the two will be cheap, but I sure would love it. It seems Breeland finally played to his full potential last season.

Isn’t that the case for most ex-Redskins players? Always seem to fly once they leave the FedEx Field nest.

After getting rid of TW, what is our current cap space?
After getting rid of TW, what is our current cap space?
Overthecap looks like they moved him off ours and shows us with 35M. What I wonder is if we could conceivably release Alex Smith, take the hit this year and hit the ground running next year with no remaining BA issues?

I see we are number 2 with the most space.
