Part of the role of an offensive tackle is to basically be the bodyguard for the qb. Are you content to have a decent bodyguard for your franchise player as long as he's healthy or do you want the best available bodyguard to protect him?

I guess I just don't think like most of you. I guess we'll see if Mike Shanahan agrees with me in his choices in free agency and in the draft this offseason.

Make no mistake, part of the reason that Polumbus appears to be doing a decent job in pass protection is that RGIII makes him look better.

Man, I could swear that in the pre-season there were people saying that Griffin was going to make the line better than it looked with Beck and Grossman. And I swear I remember some people saying that that argument was crazy talk. (not saying it was you warrior). Seems like having a QB with a quick release, decisive in his throws, and aware of the rush, might just help the line. That is some amazing stuff.

I'm not saying Compton has no value just because he went to a smaller school. What I'm saying is the front office should always think in terms of being better off. If D.J. Fluker was available in the 3rd round next April, would the Redskins pick him or would Mike Shanahan draft another position, trade the pick and move down, or select that RT from Alabama that could answer your problem at RT?

What I meant by saying what I said about following college football is this: many football fans in the NFL are not familiar with the schools in the Big Sky conference or the WAC conference. Most football fans are familiar with the ACC, the BIG EAST, the BIG 12, BIG 10, and PAC 12.

A lot of people who even follow college football don't even think of the division 2 schools just NCAA division 1 colleges. This is what I meant when I said what I said.

But I don't get why it's a big deal if the fan isn't familiar with the school? How is that relevant?

A long time ago when Joe Gibbs was the head coach and Bobby Beathard was the GM, the Redskins drafted a TE named Jimmy Johnson from Howard University. Growing up in D.C. I had relatives that went to Howard and I saw Howard play when Johnson was there. When the Redskins drafted him I was excited for him. He was not the best TE in the NFL but he was a great blocker and a very good receiver. No one is looking at certain value that the smaller schools possesses. People have their eyes trained more on Fred Davis because he went to USC or on Jimmy Graham because he played for the "U". The tight ends at Norfolk State, Howard, Grambling, or a losing program like Rice University would appear more under the radar. Fans/people are not familiar with these players and wouldn't be familiar with them unless there was a program about them on ESPN 2 or something.

Who cares what the fans know. As long as the scouts are doing their job that's all that matters.

I'm not really following the point being made, but remember a few things:

1) like Smoot said, the teams have scouts that are looking at both the big schools and the diamond in the rough type schools/players

2) the draft is about 2 things, a players value to your team, and their perceived value to other teams. So if a diamond in the rough type is available at round 3, you still may pass on him thinking that other teams don't see him the same way. So you gamble a bit on that one, and let him slide to the 4th/5th/6th hoping to use trades and slides in order to get him at the lowest draft point possible, but higher than when you miss him.

3) the draft is not a perfect science, one player from a small school most likely will not break your team, but missing on an "obvious" choice can hurt a FO's reputation.

4) ultimately 3rd-7th rounders are players with potential. How you value that potential goes a long way in setting the price point for him.

All I'm saying is that priorities should first be centered around RGIII first. He is the redskins. If there was a safe way to put him on defense and special teams - I have no doubt that the redskins would be the best team in the nfl- right now.
