Re: Redskins 2012 Salary Cap Status
I guess my source was wrong. I was told that after the new CBA apparently Allen and Co. found that the bonuses don't count against the CAP. In other words we sign a guy to a 5 yr 10 mill with a signing bonus of 7 mill..... the 7 mill would not count against our CAP and basically only the 5yr 10mill would which is 2 mill for this year. I was told that is how we were able to sign the players we got after the league took our 18mill leaving us with 18mill to play with.
This doesn't make much sense, haven't heard anything to this effect. I do believe the $18M charge has changed the way we handle our bonuses. I think Allen would prefer to take the bulk of the bonus hits sooner than later, but the cap penalty has handcuffed us. Therefore he has constructed more deals like Morgan and Meriweather - adding 'fake' years to the contracts to push more bonus money to the future and less to 2012. |

It made sense because I couldn't figure out how we had not gone over our limit already.
That doesn't make sense - that would essentially make the salary cap pointless. Every salary would get shifted into signing bonus every year. Plus, giving people big signing bonuses when they didn't count against a cap is what got the 'Skins penalised in the first place. |

It made sense because I couldn't figure out how we had not gone over our limit already.
The basic tenant of the salary cap is that on your salary cap books, you have to account for any money you actually pay to a player. So if you pay out a base salary, you must account for 100% of it that year. If you pay out a signing bonus, you must account for it over the life of the contract. There is no way you can avoid recognizing on the cap any funds you actually pay to a player. |
Re: Redskins 2012 Salary Cap Status
are there any video/computer games that offer a realistic salary cap/franchise mode? i didn't buy madden 12 but i assume there still only 2 ways to structure contracts; back load using the bonus, or even steven using no bonus

Re: Redskins 2012 Salary Cap Status
Good job. I have a few discrepencies:
- Gano's 2012 salary and cap hit is $615K. - Monty's 2012 cap hit is $1.3M. His deal is 5 years not 4. Also seems the bonus he received was treated as signing bonus after all, so the $2.75M SB gets allocated at $550K per year for 5 years. So $700K salary + $550K cap bonus + $50K workout bonus = $1.3M. - Carriker's 2012 cap hit is $3.95M. Apparently because of the player-out-clause, the whole $3M bonus has to be expensed in 2012. So his cap hit is $700K sal + $3M bonus + $250K workout bonus = $3.95M. Thanks to PCinOZ for this info. - Grossman's salary is $920K but he qualifies for vet min ($540K). So his cap hit is $540K sal + $65K signing bonus = $605K. - Scott's salary and cap hit is $700K. - I have Garcon's cap hit at $4.7M including a $400K roster bonus. - Meriweather's 2012 salary is actually $1.45M so his cap hit is $1.85M. (don't mean to nitpick) |

(don't mean to nitpick)
I was going to ask you about both those things, particularly the vet exemption on Grossman because it seemed weird that you would have him down below the vet minimum for a player with 9 accrued seasons on your cap sheet. My Grossman # was a guesstimate based off the vet minimum and signing bonus. I read that Carriker thing in the CBA two nights ago and it didn't really make a lot of sense to me why the Redskins would do that when they're writing all these five year deals that void after two, so I didn't adjust. But your number on him makes more sense than mine after having read that. Still doesn't really pass the logic test though. I always have a hard time finding out which league year roster bonuses are in, so most discrepancies between my numbers and NFLPA data has to do with roster bonus placement. I'll correct everything in a subsequent post. |

So makes sense I think. - Ya I noticed the Carriker item on PC's sheets, then it was discussed further in the Yahoo capologists group. A few capologists agree this is the proper accounting method. Though I agree it seems strange considering how they've constructed other recent deals. - NFLPA only gives salary info. Signing bonus and roster bonus info is always harder to come by. Generally I start with the salary data, then try to fill in the blanks from there. |
