if you have been posting in this thread this article is a must read. it is from march 2010 but it has a lot of information on the achilles and the effect it has on athletes, mainly nfl players
Compared to the general population, athletes in the National Football League (NFL) are at increased risk for injury because the game involves explosive acceleration and sudden changes in direction.3 Very little is known about the epidemiology of Achilles tendon ruptures in the NFL. Utilizing data publicly available on the Internet, one retrospective review identified 31 Achilles tendon ruptures in NFL players over a five-year period (5.2 injuries/year).3 During the 2008-2009 NFL season, six players suffered season-ending Achilles tendon ruptures. Although the incidence of Achilles rupture is low, 0.93% per NFL game, nearly 36% of affected players never return to playing at the NFL level.3

Furthermore, in the reviewed 21 NFL skill players who returned to play, there were significant decreases in games played per season (11.67 games per year pre-injury versus 6.17 games per year postinjury) when averaged over the three seasons before the injury and the three seasons after the injury.3 There were also decreases averaging nearly 50% in power ratings of the returning players for the three seasons after the injury compared to the three seasons before the injury. These data indicate that even in players able to return to their former level of play, the quality of play may suffer permanently.
it's kind of depressing if you have hope for landry's return to playing an an elite level

I would hate to see LaRon go but its looking that way, is Atogwe coming back for sure next year? Are you guys sold on Gomes as a starter? I would like to see us go after Branch from the Raiders if Laron does go.

And that would would be a shame. The best players wanna be part of the solution, not the problem.

Don't know for sure, but read in Washington Examiner that Atogwe may be finished and that Gomes is not viewed as a starter. If both of those are accurate statements, Redskins may actually need to take a chance on Landry for at least one more season.

Somebody has to play back there.

I've been saying for a long time that the safety position is a huge problem in our defense, and it may be getting worst if we lose Atogwe and Landry. I hope there are some good FAs available, b/c we won't have any high picks to deal with this problem any time soon.

As I understand it, Shanahan and Atogwe don't have the best relationship (kind of like Shanahan and Gano). But much like Smith fights to the end for Gano, Haslett does the same for Atogwe.

Also, Atogwe wasn't entirely healthy this year.

I think he returns

Odd. Atogwe seems like a stand-up guy. He has been good in the past. I hope he sticks around for at least one more year.
Landry is a bag of upper body muscle.

But he is hot a high caliber safety.
I'm not even sure if he is a medium caliber safety.

He's an athlete but hes not a smart one.

He's not a game changer.

He doesn't make big plays.

He's injury prone.

If his contract is up let him go we can do better.
The only part of that I agree with is that he's injury prone. When he's healthy, he is most def a game changer. I can think of 3-4 games off the top of my head that I don't think we win if he's not playing.
