Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
He needs to be aware of the fact that he is not going to get a starting job ANYWHERE in the NFL now, so if he wants to come back to WFT it would have to be as a mentor/coach/backup on a substantially lower salary. If we trade for a veteran, even Mariota , he will be out of here.
I feel like we're going with the unnecessarily harsh "you ain't shit, GTFO" move here, when in reality it will be a respectful exchange.

Here's the convo:

Alex: Ron, I want to keep playing. I know I can do this.

Ron: Alex, I respect the hell out of you because you went through a river of shit and came out clean on the other side, but we can't have you back at your salary, and we want to get younger at qb. It's not smart to rely on a 37 year old qb with an injury history as your #1 option in this game.

Alex: Ron, I disagree but I respect you for being upfront about it.

Ron: Alex, we're gonna let you go, but:

(option A)if you can't find a starting job somewhere else we'd be happy to have you back as a backup, on a backup's salary.

(option B) I know with your work ethic teams will be calling, and I'll put in a good word for you if you need it. Good luck.

Good news to me.

Now draft a LT at #19,our next QB to mentor in Round 2, then get him some elite WR weapons in FA. We can buy a stud MLB too.

No need to spend our whole cap on a QB.

We're NOT getting Watson, Prescott or Carr for a good price, so the other options are really no better than a healthy Alex Smith, Taylor Heinicke or 2nd-Round pick. Build around our QBs. Smith was 5-1 with ONE wide receiver and a backup O-Line that never had a stud LT. He'll be even better with some talent around him and time to throw. His arm and high IQ are still there.

No to Wentz, Trubisky, Mariota, Newton, Winston, Brissett. McCarron, Fitzpatrick, Taylor, Dalton, McCoy, RG3, Barkley, Sudfeld, Flacco. Ryan Griffin, CJ Bethard. Gabbert, Geno Smith, Glennon, Hoter, Hundley. Mannion, Dobbs, Mullens, Boyle.

That's the full list of FA option s left.

Seems like too many cooks? I don't know much about him, just the quick scan that he also has been a GM before, and that he was in the Colts FO for most of PManning's run, culminating with leaving the season after Manning retired.

Hard to know how much his ability played in to the Colts success, but 6years with the Jaguars doesn't inspire much confidence.

Actually, as Director of Pro Personnel in JAX, it looks like he did very well. They seem to have laid an egg this past season, after he was gone.

Smith is not an option. If he plays this season, he won't be available very long because he will be injured in short order. Frankly, I think he is acting like a fool to try to play in 2021. He did the impossible and came all the way back but it's time for him to move on to another challenge.

As far as WFT is concerned, he can no longer give us what we need at QB. We can't run the type of offense we would prefer due to his immobility. We can forget RPO's and any other planned QB runs. He can no longer escape when the pass protection breaks down, and so forth.

Most of all, his willingness to expose himself to the possibility of another devastating injury to his right leg seems to me to be unwise and unfair to his family.

They had one winning season, and finished 3rd or 4th every other year, with no more than 6 wins.

Edit: That said, WFT now has the GM responsible for drafting Matt Stafford, Cam Newton. And director of pro scouting who was responsible for drafting Peyton Manning.

If these guys can't make the right decision when it comes to our qb then I don't know what resume you need...

I was commenting on the fact that he is/should be smart enough to realize his situation and loves football so much he just wants to keep on going. Regardless the guy is totally class and should be treated with such and I fully expect Ron to do so much in the same way as you suggest.... there is no GTFO

and Andrew Luck.
Their strategy, shit the bed so you get the first overall pick.

Rivera hiring anyone with connections.
Might as well hire Rob Kardashian and Sarah Huckabee.

I'm going to be the first off the Rivera bandwagon. F this guy and he cronies.

not sure why Smith is coming back. he can't get away from the rush. it's a tough decision but you have to move on.
