Well this just settles it.

Democrats = doo doo heads
Republicans = good guys.

Thanks for clearing that up President Trump, glad we can count on you!
Funny how this shit always "pops UP" every time the russian investigation makes news,like when there are new indictments or new charges or when former WH people plead guilty of anything.

So, how about the steel and aluminum tariffs? Cred, I'm ignorant, can you tell me who wins in a trade war?
So, how about the steel and aluminum tariffs? Cred, I'm ignorant, can you tell me who wins in a trade war?
The US is a huge market with ALOT of sway. I believe that you can best negotiate from a position of strength. With those two points as a base, I think the tariffs gives the US negotiators leverage to get deals, ie revamped NAFTA, that are fairer to US products.

I doubt any country will truly want to engage the US in a severe trade war as both sides would be hurt but I think it's a valid approach to remind other country's with a shot across the bow that the US does have tools at its disposal if countries think they can create unfavorable conditions for US products and sidestep agreements in place, or run up massive trade surpluses with the US.

So are we in the negotiating phase, or the "it's signed into law, expect retaliatory tariffs" phase?

Yahoo news lead headline:
Trump takes the sting out of his tariffs

It's just not smart to buy into all the media fearmongering that goes on nowadays. Listening to the main media we would have had 3 nuclear wars; to environmental collapses; a stock market drop along the lines of the great depression all in the last 11 months.

Some countries may try to play the retaliatory game, but all the main actors, including Trump and the US, understand that we don't want a full on trade war, anymore than we want an all out nuclear war. The US for the past 12 years has (economically, and I include Bush so it's not just Dem vs Rep) have been tucking our tail trying to be the "better player" while other countries have taken advantage of it. They know they have had much better access to our markets then we have to theirs, and that for the most part that isn't going to change. AND, until India or China become honest players with strong capital purchasers, we are the biggest and best market to sell in. Especially if we also reduce the regulatory state that has been built up in those same last 12 years.

The world isn't going to go into a trade war tailspin, although you may pay more for hangers (my company deals with lots of steel drapery hangers and are directly affected by all the geopolitical games going on right now).

from the above yahoo headline article:
https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/trump-takes-sting-tariffs-202014234.html
Trump seeking concessions
The exemptions for Mexico and Canada are contingent on the outcome of efforts to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, which are underway, with no conclusion imminent. Trump wants concessions from both countries that would boost American-made content in the thousands of products that cross the three nations’ borders every day. Trump may view the exemption from his metal tariffs as a carrot to be dangled during the negotiations, and the threat of ending the exemptions as leverage he can use.
When the other countries retaliate against us , we will lose. Trump does something stupid like this every time something doesn't go well for him .If not the russian investigation ,Hope Hicks, Gary Cohn, Sam Nunberg , son in-law losing his security clearance , always something.

Re: When is Enough ,Enough?

I would like to know more about the break down of the tariffs. Not all aluminum and steel is the same grade. When Trump said he wants the nation's military ships and planes made with American steel well it already is. A tariff isn't going to change that he is just trying to rile up his base. The stuff we import tends to be low grade. I would prefer to import it and keep our high grade stuff for making military planes and not sardine cans. So for me there has to be a difference on the tariffs placed on the raw materials. High tariff on high grade stuff keep the low grade stuff tariff free. Raising the price on steel and aluminum will impact the food purchasing power of our poorest members and I am not cool with that. Even if it is only 2 cents a can as was suggested that adds up.

Nice to see Trump draining the swamp, getting rid of Tillerson. It's the long-career established politicians like Tillerson that need to go the most.
