Re: 2009 Free Agents
My guess is by Wednesday (maybe Thursday), the Redskins re-sign Hall at a price for about 6 years, $44 million and $14 million guaranteed. Total guess. Either way, I think we'll keep him.
I want to keep him, but according to a reputable source on extremeskins, Hall was asking for more garaunteed than that before Aso's new contract, which raised the bar for everyone. We might be able to get him for a contract with total 6 year value in the $44M range, but the garaunteed money to sign him is going to be 18M or so now - minimum. If we resign him, i'm guessing 6 years, 48M with 18M in garaunteed money, done in standard skins fashion where the first three years are manageable before major restructruing is required. I'm thinking cap figures of 5M, 7M, and 8M in the first three years. |

Why? Asomugha is the best corner in the game. Hall can't carry his jock. I'm not a contract wiz by any means, but I don't think Asomugha's contract gives Hall any more leverage in his asking price. |
Re: 2009 Free Agents
Exactly GMScud. Oakland had a 7 year contract with Hall and nothing but a franchise tag with Asomugha. If Hall was even close to Asomugha, it would have made more sense to hold on to Hall and let Asomugha go at the end of the year.

The Hall debate has been somewhat off-point IMO (not pointing to you BHA but in general i mean) as the focus has been a Rogers vs. Hall theme or a Hall vs other FAs. From the day we picked him up I've viewed Hall as Springs replacement and i still think this is sort of a common sense view. So... we're paying Springs $8+ mill to miss several games each season (with '07 being the exception) and btw every off-season he talks about leaving... I'll take Hall, who wants to be Redskin, for $6 to $8 mill a year and feel like we did the smart thing. If we let Hall walk away to get paid $6 to $8 mill somewhere else and continue to pay Springs that kind of dough here... lame!!! |

Per the terms of last year's trade, the Jets will get a second-round pick if New Orleans locks Vilma up before March. The Saints don't have a second-rounder, so they'd lose the 14th pick overall. Source: New Orleans Times-Picayune
I assume that is a true quote, but I got it second hand. Certainly puts the Saints in a bit of a bind. |

It does'nt. And I think Hall knows that. The Skins certainly do. |

Well it's more complicated than just that. If they signed him, the 4th round pick they owe the Jets would become a 2nd round pick, which they already owe to the Giants this year. And if the Saints had to take back that 2nd round pick and redirect it back to the Jets then they'd have to compensate the Giants by offering their 1st round pick in 2010. I think |
Re: 2009 Free Agents
Here is a current list of available FA/RFA Punters. (As of this morning)
Player Name ---------Current Team--------------Status------Ranking Chris Hanson------------New England Patriots--------FA---------18th Craig Hentrich-----------Tennessee Titans------------FA-------- 22nd Sam Koch --------------Baltimore Ravens------------RFA -------- 9th Hunter Smith----------- Indianapolis Colts -----------FA ---------12th Either - Sam Koch or Hunter Smith would be a nice pickup now that Lechler is resigned. Our only current punter is some 24 year old kid named Zac Atterberry I know nothing about him. |
Lets slap the franchise tag on Montgomery or Golston, hell throw it on Doughty. I want to feel good about a player on our team not being able to leave. I am sick of all these teams using this to keep players, when we just give them all life time contracts.
Ummmm, then pay them top 5 money? All for some guys not too many other teams would be throwing much at us for? You drunk? |

Thanks for the update CRedskins, I was curious to know what was going on with Vilma. It doesn't sound like he's going to test the free agent market. |

Have you heard if the kicker from the Bengals has been resigned? There are still some punters out there that are better than Atterberry. |
Re: 2009 Free Agents
From JLC today:
DeAngelo Hall/Phillip Daniels Update - Redskins Insider
DeAngelo Hall/Phillip Daniels Update The Redskins are scheduled to meet with Joel Segal, the agent for free agent CB DeAngelo Hall, at the combine today/tonight, according to league sources. The Skins want to sign Hall to a long-term deal and their best chance of keeping him off the open market would be to make a strong pitch this weekend. (If the Skins don't get Hall, and opt to cut Shawn Springs to save $6 million in cap space, recently cut corners Drayton Florence, Dre Bly and Leigh Bodden are all names that have come up in past personnel meetings at Redskins Park, according to team sources, and are players who could interest the team if the price is right (i.e. cheap). Segal also represents QB Jason Campbell, but to this point the Skins have displayed no interest in extending his contract beyond the one year remaining on it. I wouldn't anticipate much movement on that this weekend. The Skins remain several million over the cap, and Hall could well be the only major signing they make. DE Phillip Daniels, meantime, has a contract for the next two years, but it voids automatically prior to the start of free agency, meaning the veteran will in fact be an unresticted free agent when the market opens on Thursday. Daniels is coming off of season-negating surgery and the Skins have displayed an interest in re-signing him, according to sources, but signing him now is not a priority and he will get a chance to see if other teams have interest. When Daniels contract voids the Skins will get roughly $2 million in cap relief, though with just two NFL proven DEs under contract right now (Andre Carter and Jason Taylor), and Taylor a candidate to be a cap cut himself, the team will surely have to find an end or two, and that salary will eat back into that $2-million savings.
|
