I'm telling you RIGHT NOW their "D" doesn't scare the shit out of me and you can write THAT down. They were probably the favorites last year too, or was it the Cowgirls? So what? They've done a pretty good job but I'm not ready to call them genuise's yet. Not by any means. They made their strength a little stronger probably but they have'nt really addressed anything else. And you're assuming they're going to have a good draft and we're not just because they have more picks right now. And Maualuga is not the only LB in the draft better than Boley, so we may still get a starting OT and LB in the draft. They're not the only ones who can address needs in the draft.
Don't underestimate Jerry Reese, he has proven to be an excellent GM. |
Re: 2009 Free Agent Signings
3 thoughts here:
1 we should go after crowell and sign him to a 1 year deal as a OLB for a year here 2 we should also go after khalif barnes to maybe see if we could fix up our RT spot 3 how will the giants afford all those DLineman, who of them will be cut, it could be robbins, or it could, could, be umenyiora
Perhaps the Giants are stocking the DL because Umenyiora's rehab isn't going so well. |

I am in no way trying to downplay what the Giants have done. I just don't buy that what they've done is great and what we've done sucks. I just don't. But I understand what you're saying SFREDSKIN. :food-smil |

I never said what we've done sucks. All I'm saying is that with all the holes we have we could have addresses lots of them and the strengthen them even more with the draft. We still have holes in the OL, LB and DE spots, I'm not sold on Taylor, possibly losing Evans. Our LB corps is a mess, Fletcher is great but his getting old, McIntosh was bad last year and is a question ? (I hope he regains his form) Washington gone, Blades is good, Fincher Is decent. We have too many ? going into the draft. |

Some of the things you outlined here I had in mind with the Room for disappointment thread... but i can't really agree you're painting a realistic picture of the roster. LB corp a mess? Fletcher is a beast, period. His age is a worry and the fact that he got a bit nicked up last year but this is one of the most durable players in the league. Rocky struggled but remember it was his recovery year from the '07 knee blowout, and leading up to that incident in '07 he was off the hook. There is no reason to write him off. Clearly we want to add a legit playmaker, probably at WLB because Rocky is likely to switch this year. But ultimately we've got a serviceable starter in Blades and a pretty fascinating opportunity in Taylor (even though I'd prefer a monster like Rey at LB so JT can stay at RDE). I don't understand you're perspective on DE. We've got AC and JT locked down and the team can easily sign Daniels or Evans for a little money (probably the only other thing will do in FA i would guess). The o-line can be vastly improved w/ a single decision if the FO takes a stud at 13. Not only does this give us a monster at RT it allows Jansen to compete elsewhere or at least be the primary back-up and don't pretend like he won't have a giant chip on his shoulder if/when he gets an opportunity (like last year). |

We need a replacement for Taylor going into 2010, Daniels is pre-historic and coming back from injury and Evans could sign with the 49ers tomorrow. |

If I said I was 100% happy with everything I'd be lying. But even though I had doubts about AH, I feel better about him now and think he will be a beast on our line and it will help our entire defense. We needed to address that and we did. I love that we got Doc back even though Kendall did a good job at the same position last year. At least we got younger. I'm not completely sold on Hall but I expect for us to get alot more INT's on "D" this year. Especially with AH on the line. Until we see what happens in the draft it's hard to tell how well we've done, but I feel that we've made some improvement over last year. I'm not completely sold on Taylor either but signing AH just made his job easier too. I would like to get Marcus back and spend at least our first 2 picks on the line and then get a LB but that ain't gonna happen. If we upgrade the center or tackle position, or both, in the draft, it would be hard for me to feel we have'nt done a good job of upgrading our team. |
Re: 2009 Free Agent Signings
I'm eager to see how Buzbee, Jackson, and Wilson fit in with everything. I know Buzbee is seen as a pass-rush specialist supposedly. I'm not sure what Jackson is seen as, and I tend to think Wilson might be better suited as a LB.
The Giants made some fine moves, but so did we. |
Re: 2009 Free Agent Signings
Details on the Canty signing:
Giants beat Pack to Canty punch Now that Chris Canty has signed a six-year, $42 million deal with the Giants, a contract that includes $17.25 million guaranteed in the first two years, here's something to keep in mind: The ex-Cowboys defensive lineman is now better paid than all three of New York's top three defensive ends, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora and Mathias Kiwanuka. Tuck signed a five-year, $30 million contact that included $16 million of guarantees in January 2008. While Kiwanuka is still working under his relatively modest rookie contract, it's Umenyiora who might have the most unfavorable reaction to Canty's new deal. Umenyiora, who missed all of last season with a left knee injury, is still under the six-year, almost $41 million deal he signed in December 2005. That contract runs through 2012, and includes $15 million of guarantees, but the marketplace has since rendered it a bit out of date. It's expected that Umenyiora will ask the Giants to renegotiate his deal if he has a big comeback season in 2009. Canty was prepared to leave the Giants complex and fly to Green Bay for a free-agent visit Sunday night -- if New York didn't hit the $7 million per year average that he was seeking. According to a league source I talked with, the Packers weren't scared off at all by the $7 million average salary and would have likely topped New York's offer. But Green Bay, which is switching to the 3-4 defense this year, wanted Canty to come to town and meet the coaching staff before negotiations began in earnest. The Packers viewed Canty as the best 3-4 end available in free agency, but they traditionally move slow in free agency and weren't prepared to compete with the Giants' offer in negotiations over the phone. But early Friday morning, after the start of free agency, Canty was almost certain he was going to sign with Washington, only to see the Redskins take their deal off the table when they locked up Albert Haynesworth around 5 a.m. Canty had been offered $18 million guaranteed by the Redskins, and he wasn't eager to visit Green Bay if it involved the risk of potentially losing the Giants' deal in the process. After Haynesworth, Canty and ex-Arizona defensive end Antonio Smith, who signed a five-year, $35 million deal with Houston on Saturday, are the only two free-agent defensive linemen who reached the $7 million average in salary this weekend. -- Don Banks (6 Personally I think he's overrated, in fact far more overrated, than big Al and yet he got a truckload of guaranteed money. Canty's stats are not much better than Evan's when he starts or Daniels before he got hurt. Whatever... i'm just glad we didn't add another cowpoke to the roster. |

Maybe some line help for depth purposes, no word on Marcus returning |

Is Willis the front-runner? Personally what's your guess... do we make further restructures/cuts to add him (or another lineman) and who could be a possible casualty? |

What are we doing about a Punter? Is Hunter still available? Can we afford him?

Ya we got to get him, he's proven and should be cheap, plus we don't have to waste a draft pick on a punter |
