Re: How far can Beck take us?
Normally I don't get very excited about pre-season games. This year is going to be different, mainly because of the QB situation. It's going to be an opportunity for this Beck/Grossman competition to play itself out in the face of some very competitive teams, somewhere along the line a victor will emerge.

Seemed like a very even handed assessment to me. No outrageous claims, just basically that John can get it done...may take some time for experience...... Pretty vanilla stuff. |

I'd say it's really Rex's job to lose, and John Beck has to beat him out. And I like John, I like the competitive nature. But Beck's going to have to prove he can do it every day in camp, especially once Rex and even Kellen are allowed to get on the field. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
I believe Grossman instantly gives us our best chance to win. Of course we're not in a win instantly mode. But then my concern with Beck is that dude's already 30 (in mid August) so is he our long term answer. Maybe. But I'm not quite convinced yet. I'm curious to see what happens this summer

Re: How far can Beck take us?
Assuming we draft a young qb in 2012, were not looking at a truly competitive football team until 2013 or 2014 at the earliest... Snyder had better be patient.

If Shanahan showed one thing last year, it's he's not a good liar. So I tend to believe he's serious about Beck, and KS was also a big fan of Beck prior to him coming here. Crazier things have happened. Not sure why so many refuse to believe he could actually be a decent starter.
Win-Win situation for Shanahan? C'mon Smooty, you know the answer to that(his being a long term option). The HC and the FO didn't like what they had to work with in terms of QB potential this draft. If they did Ryan Mallet would have been our #1 pick or Locker. Both will not make it in the NFL. It still blows my mind that so many were hooked on Locker. The guy had no accuracy, and his INT ratio sucked. He could get it done on the ground, but his passing game was questionable. I was sort of surprised they didn't go with Ponder, but Shanny and our scouts must have seen that he wasn't a good fit or something. Next season some real good QB prospects will be coming out that aren't named Luck. I am thinking Shanny wants at least one of them. Beck is an emergency stop gap if Rexy sucks or goes down early on in the season. He is not our long term answer. Maybe our long term backup, but not starter. IF the guy couldn't break 3rd string with the sad ass Dolphins, I doubt he will be a starter for us, and if he is, we are in a world of trouble. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
He hasn't had the chance for it to happen. Now's his chance.
He had his chances, just didn't get the job done, even on a befuddled Miami team. Shanny didn't like anything we could have landed in the 2011 draft at QB so he passed on a QB til 2012 and maybe 2013 to get another QB. Could Beck beat out Rexy? Sure he could, but the problem is that isn't saying much in itself. Rexy isn't the best starting QB in the first place. We acquired him to backup McNabb and give us an insurance policy of having a vet QB in there at all times. Rexy is #1 by default. WE are basically in between QB experiments. In spring 2012 our next QB experiment will be revealed, and we will only hope and pray this one takes. Every other QB "experiment" since 1993 has ended in mediocrity.(Shuler,Ramsey,JC, McNabb). I don't include Johnson or Brunell in there since they did get us into the playoffs. Frerotte was never intended to be the starter and had that thrust on him. |
Re: How far can Beck take us?
Y couldn't we just have had Rodgers in that draft? 1 pick ahead of us SMH

Re: How far can Beck take us?
Beck is a disaster waiting to unfolding. It's not going to be pretty trainwreck so you guys best have hardened stomach. I can't wait for this clown to go away.

Re: How far can Beck take us?
I can see why Shanny feels that Beck might have success in this league. Couple of things popped out at me...quick feet, good vision and quick release. I also noticed that he tends to telegraph his passes (tunnel vision) and his accuracy is a big question mark.

Last flat out open preseason competition we had was between Wurfel/Matthews/Rosenfels. Fun to watch but hopefully the end result will be better this time around. |
