1. someone who was hired as a GM or VP of Player Personnel for an NFL team in the past

2. someone who would be given the title of GM here

im basically parroting what everyone else is saying .... i would like to see a traditional NFL organizational structure.

the formula of having a coach be GM (gibbs, shanny) has not worked.

the formula of having VP/owner be GM (cerrato/snyder, allen/snyder) has not worked.

perhaps a GM being the GM will work.

So 1 and 2 are what Allen is/has been. So what if Allen was GM, and ONLY the GM?

i feel like i am getting the socratic method here.

you have a lot more knowledge and answers than me.

i always thought Allen did contracts and didnt do the drafting and player evaluating in Tampa. I assume from your comment that he did.

but what has Bruce Allen done to make him a qualified player evaluator?

1st round picks of micheal clayton, carnell williams and gaines adams do not look so great in hind sight. his later rounds dont look great either.

this past FA offseason when he was fully in control for us doesnt look so great. lauvau as a day one priority? porter 4.5 mil per? all the concerns that kept other teams away from hatcher came true .. why didnt we give them the same weight?

why should fans not be disappointed that we have not been told any specific plans to improve on the way our roster is assembled?


if allen really has been a player evaluator for all these years, yes then i would let him have another go at it this year.

But if he hasnt been doing that, then we need to bring in someone who does and can. he had this past year to play GM and he failed to address major issues with this roster that came back to bite us during games and are still issues today.

do you trust bruce allen's ability to evaluate talent? is there no one else better avialable?

Allen made it pretty clear last year he was going to be involved with personnel decisions. Even under Shanahan he had input. That area has never been his strength.

Even with Tampa bay, it was a mix bag of results....at best. I would really love to see him step back from player aquisition, talent evaluation, scouting, etc.
He seems to do a pretty good job with PR, contracts, salary cap, etc

Lol. Not at all. Really our gutless owner is the one I'd rather hear from. I saw John Mara on NFL Network apologizing to his fan base. I don't need him to do that but say something after this mess. He rarely has anything to say about the product he puts on the field.

That sentence right there sums it up perfectly. It's what the reporters at the press conference were trying to get out of BA, and he had no answer for it.

The best thing he could have said is "The product that I have submitted for the last 5 years is a disgrace. A disgrace to the fans, a disgrace to the region that this team represents, and its storied history. I love this organization so much, and am so committed to restoring its success, that I'm willing to remove myself from the process of fixing it. The duties of talent evaluation, engineering the salary cap, scouting, and the draft will be handed to AJ Smith, who has a proven track record of success."

Short of offering his immediate resignation, that's exactly what Bruce Allen [U]should[/U] have done.

He's a disaster. His product is abysmal, and the team should move on from him yesterday.

If Chip Kelly gets out of his contract with Philly. I would bring him to Washington in a heart beat. I like Gruden, but Chip is my favorite coach in the NFL right now.

I think SS is trying to teach a lesson about the label "real GM," a lesson that I have needed since I have misused the term.

I thought that under MS, Bruce did contract stuff while Mike Shanny was the GM. That perception appears to not be true, or not completely - Bruce was definitely getting his personal say in there. And Bruce did a poor job of blocking ownership when they wanted nutty things.

If true, then the problem isn't that Bruce isn't or hasn't been a "real GM." He's been a "real GM" all along and the problem is that he is a bad one.

In other news, fire Bruce now.

Not pissed off at the fans. I mean how many times can I say fans can and often are dumb when it comes to sports. Even I can be, and it's what being a fan is about in many regards. Management does not have the luxury to be that way
