washington had most likely heard that someone before the 2nd round was looking to draft campbell, so they pulled the trigger on a deal.
My guess looking back is that the Cleveland Browns would have taken him with the 3rd pick of the second round (they took Charlie Frye in that position if I'm not mistaken).
It depends, you also have to take into account that Campbell was projected as a mid second rd pick, so to give up a #1, #2, and a #4 is quite excesive for a mid 2nd rd pick.
They didn't. They gave up a 1,2 and 4 for a 1. You can quibble with who they took but logically that should be a seperate issue. If they ended up drafting the greatest QB in football history it wouldn't matter either. Was the amount you paid for the pick equal in value to what you got? I say it was somewhat steep but not overly steep. They then took Campbell which may have been a misuse in terms of value because they could have taken him later but I really doubt they simply traded up too high. These guys know what is going and for some reason I imagien they thought if they went any lower they took too great a risk.

This is not a comment on you offiss but so many people around complain that we don't draft well and then they complain when we trade the picks away to get a player we want. If we aren't drafting well what do they care if we traded pcisk awya since we don't use our picks in any good way anyways.
At this early stage, I think it's far to early to try to guage whether it was a good move or not. Until he proves to be either great or a bust, how can we even argue the point?
You're right. It really is moot to discuss now.

My complaint is I want them to get it right with our picks, but it is true if we continue to pick poorly then it really isn't a big deal.

Although I will say this, we have picked fairly well in the first round, we havesn't had any seconds under Gibbs that I can remember, it's the later round picks that we have been lowsey with, and thats pretty much all will have this year, I believe we will have some wheeling and dealing to do before this draft hits, we can't sit pat on 1 #2 pick. Arrington I hope brings back some pick's.

Re: Campbell Draft day trade

As amorentz said before me.

Last year our #2 was traded to New Orleans the year before to move up and draft Cooley.

We only traded a #3 last year and this years #1 and #4.

Much better than a #2.

And this years #1 is the #22 pick. Campbell was the #25.

I think at the time last year I was just as pissed as most of you, but now that Ramsey is pretty much on his way out, and we had a winning season, I feel a lot better about the move.

Its funny how winning can cure those worries.

Who's to say we won't trade for someone's #1 THIS year?

We banked on having a winning record this year when making the Campbell decision.

BTW, San Diego is way ahead of the Giants on the Eli trade IMO. They got Merriman, Rivers, and their kicker for that little punk Eli, who rode Tiki to the playoffs.

I think that kind of is a lot to move up into the bottom portion of the 1st round. I think it was worth it though since they were able to get a young QB they like into the system a year earlier than they would have otherwise. And the fact that they would have only picked in the 20's thanks to making the playoffs it makes it more acceptable. Had the skins drafted top 10 again this year I would have been real mad to have to give it to Denver.

I also believe we gave way too much up for a guy that had one good season. Plus the fact he had,not one, but two all american running backs behind him. also one of the best defenses in the country. You figure we have a 7th rounder or 6th rounder for Brunell, 1st rounder for Ramsey, and actually 4 picks all totaled for Campbell. thats 6 draft picks, and 5 of those six are sitting their asses on the bench. Now, Campbell could turn out to be a pretty damn good QB, but that is alot to give up on a "hope so". Especially if he was to be a second rounder. We could have traded our # 1 for a #2 and #4 or so and still got him, plus a pick. It neither here nor there right now, we will see come next year.

I think we payed a premium to get a young QB in place the Gibbs likes to start learning and holding the clip board. Hopefully...Campbell paid attention and actually learned something this season....

Re: Campbell Draft day trade

We traded a 1,3,4 not a 1,2,4. I hardly think that is a premium to pay for a qb of the future. Basically all we gave up was the 3 and 4 to move up one full year in the draft. All in all not a bad deal at all. And considering Denver wasted one of their 3d rounders on Clarrett, who cares. Didn't help them any, and we have cut some of those late round picks from the last two years, because our team has good depth already. I am not upset at all about this trade.

Re: Campbell Draft day trade

It's not that bad only becasue we made the playoffs and our pick is in the 20's. It was a gamble, becasue if the skins picked in the top 10 again the trade would have been a disaster...
