The ONLY way a team trades for Ray Lewis is if he agrees to a restructuring of his contract before the trade is consummated. Lewis is not the player he was a few years ago - - even though he is still a very good linebacker. The problem isn't that he can't play anymore; the problem is that he isn't nearly worth the huge cap number than he commands based on the contract he has.

I heard from a friend who has a contact near the Ravens FO that they HOPED to get a first round pick this year and maybe a fourth or fifth next year in exchange for Lewis. IF he would agree to a contract restructuring, they MIGHT actually get that kind of offer from a team that needs to upgrade the defense in order to make a significant run at a conference championship game next year.

The Skins don't fit that model in a couple of ways:

1. Their defense is fine.

2. They don't have a first round pick to trade this year.

With regard to Lewis being past his prime while Patrick Ramsey has yet to reach his prime, let me just say this. The Redskins better hope that Patrick Ramsey has not seen is prime already. Because if his best days have already been shown on the field, that might be one of the more horrid first round draft picks of the last 25 years. It might rank right up there with tony Manderich and company...

I don't think Ramsey would represent an especially bad bust. Feature these Redskins firts rounders:

Heath Schuler 1994 QB Tenessee
Andre Johnson 1996 T Penn State

I'm giving passes to Desmond Howard and Bobby Wilson based on their SB rings. They, like Ramsey, were mere disappointments.

I'm also betting that 12th overall pick:

Yazoo Smith 1968 DB Oregon or 4th overall pick
Richie Lucas 1960 QB Penn State

didn't exactly set the world on fire, but that was before I was born. Maybe some veteran fans will remember them.

I tried to limit the damage by saying one of the worst picks in the last 25 tears. Gary Beban was another Skins first rund pick who stunk and dont even talk bout Ray Macdonald (was that his name?) the 250 lb fullback from Montana or Idaho back in the mid-60s. He was as useless as a chocolate teapot.

If we have seen the best of Partick Ramsey, then he was as useless as Heath Shuler. Neither of them was worth a bucket of warm spit. Now if Ramsey has more to show...

Ray Mcdonald 1967 Idaho FB (13 overall)

I'm afraid that even if Ramsey has better days they will be somewhere else, so for us, he be a bust.

Also,

Don Allard 1959 QB Boston College (4th overall)

They drafted three straight QBs in the first round, the last being Norm Snead in '61.(from Dallas 1st overall?) No wonder they stunk for the following decade. Can you imagine the list of guys they passed on with those three picks? Sheesh.

One thing that I believe intrigues teams to look at a Ray Lewis isn't necessarily his play anymore. He really brings leadership to the team, he commands respect from the players. Look what he did to Ed Reed, had him watching film at his house every single night. Thats the type of influence that could turn mediocre defenses into great ones.

While I don't see anyone giving up a first for old man Lewis, a 2nd I can see.

that has always been a negative about trading ramsey... but, qb's usually have more value in the end than lb's so i would not overestimate lewis's value.

plus, he has taken a lot of hits over a career.

agrreed. why potentially weaken 2 positions by moving marshall. there is no guarantee he would play better onthe weakside now

disagree. i think ramsey needs a change of scenery and a coaching staff that truly believes inhim.

looks like it won't be in arizona after the extension warner signed.

nobody has ever offered the skins that high a pick fromthe beginning. eventhe bears weren't offering it when he wasn't signed early after drafting him.

the contract is the key. he either reduces and redoes it or i think he will be gone fromthe ravens

yazoo was tragic. he would have been great had he not been injured.

add kent mcloughan or eugene epps to that list because they ended up signing with afl teams and the skins got zero for the picks

lucas was a bust, totally... as was gary beban, a heisman winner.. or cotton speyrer, whom george allen never even wanted near the field...

that is why we were always looking up at the cowboys. brandt drafted rings around the skins

macdonald actually lead the nation in rushing as a senior but NOBODY actually checked him out personally. he had 1 leg that was shorter than the other and played at a smaller school. he was also openly one of the first gay players and that did not go over too well with the vets..
he had a few terrific games inhis first year but that was it for him
