It'll cost 12.8m to cut him and ~12m to keep him. The high cap number for cutting him comes from the remaining prorated signing bonus, not any option bonus that we are paying him. The only way to get it to 7m is if the CBA is extended and we can take advantage of the June 1 cuts, pushing 5m into 2007.
That's exactly tight! If we could get him to restructure...maybe knock that down a little further too.
Would Pitt be willing to give us musch for LaVar? I know he's from there and I've heard rumors in the past that he would be interested in playing there (I bet especially now that just one the big one), but would they want him? It seems like Pitt always has good linemen on both sides of the ball, I wonder if we could get anything worth value from them.

I know that the Steeler's are a bit more thrifty than Danny-boy, so I doubt they would want LaVar's huge contract, but still, any thoughts?
IMO, Pitt is an unlikely destination for Lavar. Their bread and butter has been finding diamonds in the rough, not bringing in high priced, big name free agents. It would go against their m.o. Also, the fact that a player is a local is at most a peripheral issue for an NFL team. I wouldn't say its completely irrelevant, but it's one of those things that's more interesting to fans than to teams.
That's exactly tight! If we could get him to restructure...maybe knock that down a little further too.
The first questions that should be asked are - where is Lavar in terms of football? Is his knee likely to hold up over the next few years? Why is he overweight? Does he understand his responsibilities on the field? Is he done having long coversations with David Elfin? If the Redskins can get satisfactory answers to these questions, then I am all for a restructure. If not, a restructure will only dig us in deeper with our cap situation over the long term. If Greg Williams and Dale Lindsey do not think Lavar can be a big time contributor for say - the next three years, then they have an obligation to Dan Snyder, Joe Gibbs, Redskins fans, and to Lavar to bite the bullet and let him go. I'll say it again: it's not personal, it's business.
Seems like we just have to come to terms with the fact that LaVar is not going to remain a Redskin and we probably won't be getting jack for him. If someone can explain to me how we could possibly afford that mega-cap hit if we trade him then I guess I'm hoping for good value. I'm all for keeping him, but I would be shocked if that happens. By the way if they do release him and he signs with a team from the NFC East that would officially be the perfect nightmare ending to this mess.
LaVar seems to present quite a dilema, one simular to a rock, and a hard place. We can't afford to keep him at his current price, and can't cut him for the same reason; plus he's difficult to trade for. What a mess.
John Clayton, when asked if lavar would be a cap casualty, said that we were trying to trade lavar and that he would probably not get the roster bonus he is due...bad news if u ask me
Got a pretty good source for this, LaVar ain't going anywhere. Hate pulling the "I know something you don't know", but my guy says LaVar gets it, and his playoff game against Seatlle was proof. His high maintenece early on with JG and Williams is paying off.

how good is your source?

his high maintaince is paying off? couldn't he be low maintaince and just as good, like say... marcus washington?

I really think lavar just needs to wait 1 day whenever he wants to say something stupid, that way he can avoid the whole "i'm sorry you misunderstood me" thing every other week ;)

if he gets it and the CBA isn't fixed, he's gonna super screw our cap situation and force a lot of people out.
how good is your source?
Very good. High maintenence may have been put a better way. Gibbs and Williams early on invested a lot of time in him, early in the season, as is well documented. Gibbs and Williams have laid it straight for him from the get go. No promises, no lies. He is completely on board.

I see Lavar, (this is me now, not my source, but they agee) as a Mike Tyson type. Not psychotic, but never had anyone call him on how things are done. Unharnessed energy. Big plays, big mistakes. His big mistakes do not make the highlights, but they are there.

That's LaVar in a nutshell... nice assessment.

OK before we kiss LaVar good bye. We need to realize this information came from John Clayton. He is about as clueless as my 3 year old son. How many times have we heard reports from Clayton that a completely false. It's about time we as sports fans start holding some of these pathetic writers accountable to the fairytales they publish every week.
