Even Danny Boy and his front-office menagerie wouldn't fire a coach who was 14-2 - - would they?
Danny Boy did manage to fire Schott after he won 8 of his last 11 games in his first year in Washington. Prior to that, I don't believe the Skins had that much success in an 11 game span since Gibbs I (perhaps '96, when they started 7-1, but I believe they fell to 7-4). Considering the first few games of that season (total blow outs by Green Bay, Philly, NY, etc), and the remarkable turn-around that followed, they appeared to be a team on the rise. Why would you fire a coach at that point? The answer in this case was that Marty had personnel control, something The Dan can't live without, and something that will doom the skins until he is no longer the owner (and, unfortunately, he's pretty young).

The most amazing thing about that is we had Tony Banks as our QB! Tony Banks? To turn around a team w/ Tony Banks is nothing more than amazing. I hated to see it. Wasn't that the throwback brown uni's year. I loved those.

LOL I give Danny a by on letting him go because he was still a young owner and thought this Steve S. was the deal as he dominated the college game. He took a risk and lost but I feel he has learned to take a step back and let the coaches do their thing. How many times did we see anything on Snyder this year he was as quite as he's ever been.

You know, for all the grief Marty gets for not winning a Super Bowl it's sort of cool that in the past two Super Bowls three of the head coaches (Cowher, Dungy, Smith) are from the Schott Coaching Tree.

i would. there's better though (jeff fisher, for one). marty was smart enough to insist on firing cerrato though, and that turned out to be a truly great idea.

I have a lot of respect for Marty. I still can't believe he went 8-8 in his first season and got fired, especially when you consider the talent he was working with.

And I don't remember anyone back then saying, wait, God, how can we let Marty walk, he just went 8-8.

This site didn't exist back then but still .......

I actually was pissed that Marty was fired: (1) it's not like he took over some dynasty and ruined it; (2) it was also his first year as coach of the team; (3) the roster had just imploded and the only talent we had was VERY young and almost entirely on defense (Tony Banks was the QB and Rod Gardner was our #1 WR); (4) after starting the season poorly, he won 5 straight games (just like Joe Gibbs); and (5) Marty had an excellent track record that suggested that he deserved to stick around for more than one friggin season.

My bet is that Danny regrets that move as much as any other he's made since owning the team. Had Danny been around for Joe Gibbs' first tenure, Joe would've been fired just like Marty was.

We actually started as a Yahoo! group 'lo those may years ago.

The year was 1999. Mambo #5 ruled the charts, America said farewell to Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt in Mad About You, and Paris Hilton was still a whore.
