He's not a "Gibbs-type guy" - he won't use common sense and he will embarass us off-field. No way we should take him, even if he has any upside at all.

Maybe Russell feels that he doesn't have to prove himself till the season starts. He was a monster DL before his off field problems caught up with him. It's not the same situation as Darryl Gardener as he had off the field, bad locker room presence, and a bad back. Russell doens't have his own regimen. And it seems that no team so far is willing to wait for him to get into shape.

i thought it was stupid when we picked him up... then he was late for everything and out of shape... i can't even believe another team would bother. Now i'm pretty sure his career is over... hope he didnt waste all that cash on pills and such ;), he's gonna need it.

other teams will bother because its hard to find someone with his talent at defensive tackle. if this guy had 3/4 of the drive most players have and a clear head, then he'd be a pro-bowler every year.

Chris Mortensen reported that he was let go for violating the terms of the substance abuse policy. He tested positive for alcohol, and that's a no-no for someone who had a previous drug suspension.

I believe that this is the seventh or eighth time that he has run afoul of the substance abuse guidelines meaning that he would be given an indefinite suspension even if he were on a team's roster.

The Redskins need this guy like a moose needs a hat rack.

He was suspended by the team for the final game of the season for violating a club rule. Redskins officials were not stunned, either, when ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that Russell was cut by the Bucs because he had tested positive for alcohol, thus violating the parameters of his aftercare program. Late last year, Redskins officials and players were alarmed over the quantity of alcohol Russell was tossing down during the team's annual Christmas party at owner Dan Snyder's digs. Fact is, some team officials wondered aloud at the Christmas party if Russell was, indeed, violating his NFL probation. Recalled one player: "Even if it wasn't (a violation), you'd have thought that a guy with his history, trying to make it back into the league, would have been a little more (discreet), right? I mean, if you're Darrell Russell, you've got to know they're watching every move. But he didn't seem to care." It remains to be seen if any other team takes a chance on Russell now although, the point may be moot, if the NFL suspends him again. Defensive linemen who weigh 300 pounds and are as athletic as Russell are always tempting. But given his penchant for recidivism, getting another opportunity will be difficult. Certainly he'll never have a support group like the one in Tampa, with general manager Bruce Allen, coach Jon Gruden, and d-line coach Rod Marinelli. It should have been a blessed trinity for Russell, since Allen drafted him in Oakland, Gruden coached him there, and Marinelli was his college position coach at Southern California. If that threesome couldn't convince Russell to walk the straight and narrow, chances are no one else can, either.[/I]

If he couldn't make it in Tampa he's not going to make it anywhere. That was the best situation possible for him and he straight up blew it.... before they even got to training camp!

I wonder why none of the skins went up to him to ask him what the hell he was doing. I don't remember what the whispers were saying about him as far as his presence in the locker room but I'd have thought a fellow player or coach would atleast go up to him and see why he was getting plastered at a team event.
