I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Blaylock pushes Rock for a spot. He's better than it seems people are giving him credit for and he's one of Saunders' boys. Rock is a damn fine #3 RB, a solid special teamer, and a "core Redskin," but Blaylock is probably more talented and a good teamer too.

Re: D. Blaylock

couldn't Rock also move back to FB and become depth for that position?

Re: D. Blaylock

This is tough, cause I value Rock's contribution on spec. teams, but let's be real - do you think Rock is a good nfl rb? He made it initially as a fullback. His fumbles haven't helped matters thats for sure.

I think 3rd string rb may be the most vital 3rd string position on our roster, given the amount of touches the 2nd stringer gets, & that both Portis & Betts have had their share of injuries.

Re: D. Blaylock

Ok Blaylock may have done very well in Saunders system when he played for KC and that is the only reason I can guess he would come to our mini camp. He's a vet. Teams are looking for the 1,2 punch. I'm sure he could find some team somewhere that needs a second RB but he comes here where we have....what 3 or 4 already? I'll be honest with you I have been hoping we drop Cartwright from the fold. I know, I know he's a true Redskin through and through but every year he never seems to move up the RB chain of command. He's a glorified kick returner. He does a good job...but when asked to step in as a RB I was not impressed. Now I'm rooting for the under dog. The "lets get some youth in here" cheering fan. I'm actually rooting for Marcus Mason(RB). I know he's unproven. I know he's from a small school. But when you see his highlights(and they are only highlights. No bad runs which we all know there had to be) I can't help but like the kid. He looks like he gets shot out of a cannon. He finds the holes and is in top gear in seconds. Almost like a younger Clinton Portis. I'm rooting for the underdog.

SBXVII,

Although I like Blaylock, I'm also a big fan of Rock. Although his most memorable play of late was his kick return for a TD against Dallas last season, I think he's more than a glorified kick returner. He's looked good when he's gotten the chance to carry the ball, although that hasn't been very often. The last time he carried more than 5 times in one game was against St. Louis, where he racked up over 100 yards on 9 carries for a 13+ yard average (higher than Portis' average against the same team on the same day). Moreover, he was a decent change-up back in the Spurrier days.

Wow, you guys are too nice to Rock. He's a fan favorite because he works hard for his stature, but he is nothing special.
Like someone else pointed out, core redskins mean nothing to me since we are still in the worst 15 year span in the history of the Redskins. Whatever it takes to turn this around, I'm all for it.

Re: D. Blaylock

If Blaylock can play special teams, I see no reason why we can't keep 4 backs.

The salary cap might prevent him from ever winning the Super Bowl though.

But that doesn't include Sellers or Broughton does it? How many running backs and full backs will they keep on the roster?

I like Rock too but, one of the reasons he set the record was because the defense was so bad and let other teams have their way with them and score points, forcing lots of return opportunities for Rock.
