Too much emphasis is placed on what is called a "shut down corner", not many who can actually claim that title in the league. The way teams play defense now with all the many combinations of coverage's "shut down" is in many ways an overstated phrase.
Great point. With the Cover 2 / Tampa 2 scheme GW uses, I don't think having a "shut-down" corner is as critical as having two safeties who can split the field and cover ground deep (which we now appear to have) and having veteran corners who can play solid zones, not make mistakes, and tackle, so the safeties don't need to play as much run support. |

You can distribute responsiblity to the strength of the players, but ultimately if there is a weakness in one of the CBs, a good QB will take advantage of his matchups. A great unit must have some semblance of balance. I'm more worried about our safeties than CBs anyway. Landry will get burned a lot if forced to play as a rookie, and Taylor gets burned a lot as is. That and our DL is a recipe for disaster against good passing attacks. I hope we do a lot more man coverage this year. |
Re: Pasquarelli with some praise for our CB situation
I think that we are better off this year in that if Spings gets hurt, Smoot can play the #1 corner position if he gets a little help from the safety. Rogers is good against the #2. With Taylor slimming down, Fletcher's coverage skills, and other depth in the secondary, we should be set there. I can't see any good reason to let Springs go until next year.

Re: Pasquarelli with some praise for our CB situation
we still have the same old pathetic pass rush. no corner in the universe can cover all day long. Mr Williams had better come up with those blitz packages he used a couple of seasons ago

Re: Pasquarelli with some praise for our CB situation
Apparently we will suck without Cox (no pun intended):
"I was just shocked. To me, I don't understand," (Chip) Cox told The Gazette. "I feel like I was better than a lot of guys still there. Just seeing what was on the field ... the competition ... I definitely was one of the top four corners on the team. You can print it. I hope it goes to Washington. "I thought I'd make it to the main camp. They couldn't even put me in a preseason game." Als' Cox mulls return |
Re: Pasquarelli with some praise for our CB situation
I wonder if Butler's signing was more a product of the team's weariness of Fred Smoot? An insurance policy maybe?
Something tells me one of these guys (apart from Springs) won't make it to the final roster. |

I think you are speaking apart from Springs AND Smoot in this case. We made a decent investment in him, plus he intangibles like getting the crowd into it, the Skins wont cut him. He is still a good 3rd or 4th CB. |

After what happened last year I expect we'll go overboard and keep as many depth guys as we can. Springs is obviously older and therefore more of an injury risk at this point and Smoot has alwys been a gamer but fragile. Butler? If he stays healthy then he has a good shot if he is good on ST. If we keep all 5 then tell me our 5th corner isn't the best 5th corner in the league. We might but bottom heavy on talent but we'll keep throwing bodies at you. I am cautiously optimistic about our secondary. If Landry can grasp the system(better than Rocky and Taylor did) then I would think we should be solid in the secondary. |

I couldn't handle a double-dose of Smoot jersey obsolescence. I'm rockin' that joint this year. |

How do you think I'd feel if he gets cut?! I may need therapy |

I wouldn't worry about it. Let's just watch what happens. The decision will be obvious at some point. We should be able to get 4 pretty good players from the group we have and I think Smoot will make a very strong case for himself. Butler's hamstring is a real question mark. That injury hangs around. |

So I guess you would be the artist formerly known as Smootsack, who went back to Smootsmack, and now has changed his name again. TAFKASWWBTSANHCHNA just doesn't have much of a ring does it? |
