Re: Portis Blocks Taylor
That was a gutsy, albeit stupid, hit.
I said earlier that I really thought it was unnecessary and could have cost us a major penalty. I'm hoping the refs just sat back and we're so impressed, they kept that flag in there pocket. I know I would have just sat there in awe. |
Re: Portis Blocks Taylor
As a follow up to my post I think the hit Betts put on Samuals when he ran him over was a harder hit. Not to stir things up.
"Not to stir things up." But Portis would have enough vision to see Samuels standing there and cut behind him for another 4 or 5 yards or maybe a touchdown. Where Portis puts hits on the opposite team not his own players... |
Re: Portis Blocks Taylor
The hit could have been flagged for helmet to helmet, but I absolutely loved the effort.
We shouldn't be too surprised about it either, CP has always played balls out. |

Agreed. And the funny thing is, one of Betts major attributes is his vision. Yet he probably cost himself at least five yards on that run by slamming into Samuels, instead of bouncing outside or following the block. |

Samuels needs to finish off his blocks, not stand around after his initial block. That could've been a huge gain for us. |

Portis did nothing wrong, he didn't hold, he didn't face mask, he made a good block to help spring his QB. What if Portis doesn't make that block and Campbell slows down just a step to make a cut and he gets light up from behind by Roth, and Portis just stood there and didn't try to make that block? With that happening Campbell has a greater chance to get seriously hurt or even cough up the ball... |

Great Point! But does anyone have the Video or know where to find it? |
Re: Portis Blocks Taylor
This was somewhat reminiscent of Portis’ effort last year in pre-season when he got hurt making a tackle. The guy doesn’t care if it’s pre-season, regular season, or post-season, he lays the wood and gives it his all when he is on the field. You gotta love that. I try to tell our kids on our team (that are running backs) that there is much more to being a successful back than just running the ball. Blocking is extremely important.

It could have been flagged for CP leading with his helmet, and it was very close to being a block in the back. It was borderline overall, but not enough to be flagged IMO. |

He did finish off his block that is why he was in the second level looking for a Safety or a corner to layout. Personally, I love the thought that we have 2 1,000 yard rushers in our back field. When the game is close in the 4th with both backs being "fresh" our offense has the ability to pound the ball and run out the clock. But just because Betts had a good year behind our very good o-line, I do not think that we should hate on Portis because he got hurt. When Portis is on the field he gives everything he has, it's like he doesn't know how not to give everything he has no matter if its pre-season or not... |

I saw it as a block in the back... but until we've got video, it's pointless to debate. I went nuts when it happened, after I saw no flag. Impressive hit, but discretion is key. |
Re: Portis Blocks Taylor
My biggest concern with the hit was that he came in with his shoulder, and knowing that he missed most of last season due to his broke hand and shoulder, well that kinda scared me...
|
Re: Portis Blocks Taylor
Portis will undoubtedly take himself out of this game one day with hits like that.......questionable, unnecessary, etc. (and HIGHLY entertaining)
Until then, he has my utmost respect as the TOTAL gamer and true competitor. Never in my life have I seen a specialty player lay the wood so readily. Gotta' love it! |

You can't play the game worrying about what could happen, that's when guys get hurt. |
