I don't think it's such a lock that Springs is gone.
And if we do keep him, I still think we should draft a CB in the first round to groom into a starter in a year or two (Talib or Cason remain my favorites); though I keep hearing Derrick Harvey attached to the Redskins come draft time. Still early though. If we do go the free agent route, I think we should keep any eye on Nnamdi Asomugha (sp?) from the Raiders. I think he can and will opt out. And he's the type of big, physical cornerback that Williams likes.
Yes yes definitely, I really think we should try and get him.. |
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
we have 3 legit starting corners, we will loose 1 probably at the end of this year. carlos rodgers is coming off a major injury and will not be able to start 100% next year (its a 2 year injury).
Even so, i think he'll never be more than a #2 corner...why not look at a #1?? Trufant, Hall, Samuel...these guys are solid corners and its rare talents to all be on the market at once...its a great oppurtunity to get corner for less money. |

Just because there are 3 high profile corners on the market at the same time does not mean there is an oversupply of corners on the market. All 3 of these guys are going to get huge contracts and the Skins are not even be in the running for any of them. Teams around the league are always gunning for good corners and unfortunately there a quite a number of teams that have a huge surplus of cap space that will be willing to spend the big bucks for all three of these guys. One nice thing the cap problems bring to the Redskin organization is that it will eventually force them to stop building the team through the free agency method - soon the Skins will have to follow their player personelle research and build via the draft and hopefully they will prove their worth when they do pick players via the draft. Lets stop the word that NFL players use when talking about the Burgundy and Gold - you know the saying "I came to the Redskins to get paid". I want this team to be built through the draft and stop being known in NFL circles as the place players get overpaid. |
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
because when the market is flooded with a specific position, it lowers the bargaining price. That’s basic economics whether you are negotiating free agents in football or a construction contract, the more competition the greater chance of a bargain. 3 guys can't demand "Nate Clemons" money because most teams don't have it, or can't afford that price. There's going to be compromise
|
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
I'd be all for adding one of those corners and moving Springs to FS so we can draft offense rather than trying to replace Taylor (at least next year) thru the draft.. Nobody drafts 3 safeties early (albeit we have extenuating circumstances) in 5 years..

Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
I don't think the Skins will have the cap room to be major players in free agency, but I'm sure they'll find a way to make a couple of moves.

3 guys on the market does not constitute an oversupply as you ar referring to. Also there a a lot more teams out there that have a lot of room to add an elite corner so the demand is by no means diminished. you can get a good corner in the draft - just look at one of the corners you are referring to - Asante Samuel was a 4th round draft pick. Why not take your chances on getting a guy through the draft at a lower price than blowing your cap on a highly coveted free agent corner? |
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
DON'T even think about Hall! Definitely a problem guy. Would be funny if he went to dallas & started fighting w/TO for attention.
I sure hope Dallas can't land Samuel or Trufant, those guys are good & they would be a big upgrade over Henry. I hope we keep Springs & let him finish here, maybe draft a cb, depending on who is available. I'm of the opinion that we have to prioritize, but in no particular order: OL,DL,CB, WR, maybe a young qb too. It all depends on the best players that are there when we draft. If the staff sees a great cb prospect in the 1st who has more upside than a d or o linemen, take him. |
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
Right now, we're already 20 million over the 2008 salary cap. This will change once they convert some bonuses, but it should definitely keep us from being a player in this free agent class, unless Vinny Cerratto can work some salary cap magic...
I highly doubt we're going to be swimming in extra money to hand out to FA's. We may only be able to sign our draft picks w/ out going over the cap. Do we spend money or what? |
Thanks for not rubbing it in. Don't you have a Tony Romo poster to go jack off too?
(I'm kidding)
Can't find one, they are all sold out every where you look. But there are PLENTY of Jason Campbell posters available. Heard there's going to be a 1 cent sale on them. |

I don't believe the disparity is going to be as great as you think. We'll see this time next year... meanwhile, remember, lubricate often, you don't want to chafe. |
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
Snyder will use the bonus/restructure on some of this, but I agree we won't be up front in FA on the big guys this year. C'est la vie. But if we need money, we'll find the money--there hasn't been a cap to stop us yet.
Canuck, are you out there? What's the prognosis, o Canadian Capologist? |
