Re: Is it really that Bad?
it's an entire 180 on offense, from vertical to west coast, and it's the absolute wrong offense for the quarterback we've got right now (his thing is pretty deep balls. his short stuff ain't special).
Campbell's senior year at Auburn, the one where they went 13-0, they ran a version of the West Coast offense under Al Borges (heavily influenced by Bill Walsh). Campbell's stats that year: 188-270 (69.6%), 2700 yds, 20 TDs, 7 INTs. 20 TDs might sound low, but consider that he was handing the ball off to Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown, who combined for 2079 rushing yards and 20 TDs. That was Campbell's 4th offense in 4 years at Auburn. On top of that you have a guy in Jim Zorn (a quarterback in his playing days) who has spent the last 7 years molding Matt Hasselbeck into the All-Pro quarterback that he is today, as well as helping Seneca Wallace along. So I wouldn't say it's the wrong offense for Campbell. And while he'll have some growing pains learning the new offense, I think he'll grasp it just fine and will be able to lead the team on the field this year. |
Obviously the biggest changes will come on the offensive side, but Bugel is coming back.
I wouldn't be so quick to say the WC is the wrong fit for JC.
That will be interesting to watch, we don't know how west coast this O will be, there are always varying degrees from team to team. Seattle runs it but it seems they have a number of deep & intermediate routes mixed into their pass plays & they also do a bit of power running, which doesn't seem much different in the west coast o than in any other. |

Very true. And Zorn will probably try to suit the offense to best fit JC's abilities. |
Re: Is it really that Bad?
i'm not saying it's a guaranteed loser, but switching offenses like that is a huge gamble (though our super conservative O wasn't exactly lighting fires).
the college WCO is a lot different than it is in the NFL. There's a LOT more room for error, and he had better talent vs the competition in a lot of games there. that said, even if it does work out, i doubt it's going to run 100% smoothly the first year, so we are probably looking at a setback in the short term (unless campbell just gets it or zorn is an amazing teacher). At best it's a huge question mark though. |
