Re: Portis, league MVP up to this point?
CP definitely should be in consideration. So should Albert Haynesworth (defensive leader on the unbeaten Titans, 23 tackles and 6 sacks from the DT position while they are only giving up 11 points a game), Troy Polamalu (3 picks and 30 tackles despite the fact that every team playing against the Steelers gameplans away from him), Drew Brees (QB of top offensive team in the league) and Jay Cutler (94.8 QB rating and 4-2 record despite not having even an average defense)

Re: Portis, league MVP up to this point?
Anyone remember this from back in the offseason?
New role for Portis After studying Clinton Portis on tape during the offseason, Redskins coach Jim Zorn is preparing the seven-year vet for a bigger role in the offense. Portis, who finished sixth in the league in rushing with 1,262 yards, is spending his offseason training at the team's complex. "We think that he can be a 1,800-yard back this season," assistant head coach/running backs Stump Mitchell said. "Running behind that offensive line, he should average four-and-a-half to five yards per carry." The Redskins are keeping their blocking schemes intact and believe that continuity will allow Portis to thrive as their feature back. Furthermore, the Redskins are contemplating expanding Portis' role as a receiver after the vet hauled in a career-high 47 passes last season. "We know that he was productive as a receiver last season, but most of his receptions were of the 'check-down' variety," Mitchell said. "We will see how he runs routes during mini-camps and O.T.As (Organized Team Activities) and determine if we can make him a bigger part of the passing game. He is a complete player with an unbelievable set of skills and we must find a way to maximize his talent."
|
Re: Portis, league MVP up to this point?
I'm curious, and certainly not to kick up any dust, but how is Champ Baily playing this year?
|
Re: Portis, league MVP up to this point?
I agree that you can't give it to Brees because they're not winning. Portis on pace for about 1850 (!) yards rushing. Combine that with his pass protection, and the fact that Campbell hasn't thrown an INT yet (largely because the running game is keeping him out of the 3rd & longs that tend to lead to INTs), and yeah I think you have the NFL MVP so far.

Re: Portis, league MVP up to this point?
My definition of MVP is an individual who not only has the stats but leads his team to wins. Brees might have the stats but his team is losing, Portis has the stats and is leading the Redskins to victory. Kudos to the OL and Mike Sellers for helping Portis having a great year so far.
Ditto - he is carrying the team through every misstep. |

I certainly have new respect for Stump Mitchell. Portis definitely deserves it. SFREDSKIN has it right, the MVP should make a difference between winning and losing and Portis does that. |
Re: Portis, league MVP up to this point?
Champ Bailey has been battling injuries while playing for a rotten defense.

Re: Portis, league MVP up to this point?
I can tell you right now, we better get the passing game in-sync next week, because you can be damn sure Pittsburgh's #1 goal on that MNF game week 9 will be to shut down Portis.
I really hope JC's groin is okay. It definitely affected his throwing motion. |

Re: Portis, league MVP up to this point?
The 818 yards are impressive but don't tell the whole story.
1. CP leads the NFC in rushing TDs (7, and only 1 behind White for the league lead) 2. He leads the NFL in runs of 20 or more yards (8, and that is 2 more than Jacobs of NYG who is second) 3. Portis has 43 rushing first downs, by far the league leader in that category. Marion Barber is second with only 33. He also leads the league in carries. He is our workhorse and we will only go as far as he will take us. If he can stay healthy, he could shatter his own Redskins record for rushing yards in a season. He is well on his way to Hawaii in Feb. |
Re: Portis, league MVP up to this point?
A lot of RB's have won MVP and Barry Sanders is the only one I can think of who legitimately had a mediocre line. So I don't think we're dissing the line in suggesting Portis is deserving of this award so far.
It's a strange year to date, but I can't really think of anyone else in the league even close to CP, with the exception of maybe Brees. Albert Haynesworth might truly be the MVP of the league but I don't think I'll live to see a DT win that award. Anyway, go Portis! |

Idiot. Eat that.
He was talking about Champ Bailey, ricky. |
Re: Portis, league MVP up to this point?
Absolutely, I see only Brees being able to challenge him at this point, but he'll be playing without Bush, Shockey (first week back and injured his groin again) and Colston is back but still not healthy, wearing a splint and dropping balls. It will be a tough task to keep up his numbers, as we saw yesterday.
I just heard on ESPN radio that Portis has gone over 120 yards in 4 straight games and ONLY JIM BROWN and OJ SIMPSON have ever done that. |
Re: Portis, league MVP up to this point?
CP gets my vote for MVP. However our passing game really needs to step up. We're releying too much on CP.
I agree. Where is the play action pass been for the last couple of weeks? You would think that with the running game doing as well as it is, play action would open up some big strikes down field. After the Dallas game I haven't seen it as much. |
