re: Randle El still useful?
ARE is a solid slot reciever. He's not a star or even starting material, but our team has lacked a decent flanker for several years now to play opposite MOss.
ARE seems to have good chemistry w/JC & he works to get open, comes back to the qb when plays break down. How many red zone td's has JC thrown? I know a few were to ARE. Per the original post, ARE is no Vick in terms of running ability, he's nowhere close to that good. |
re: Randle El still useful?
Frankly, if Devin Thomas or Malcolm Kelly cracks the lineup...and if Marko Mitchell continues to develop, I don't see where/how Randle El fits into that picture. We just don't throw the ball that often. Cooley had, what, 83 catches last year. Portis will get his share of carries, Betts will get more action on 3rd down and you can count on Moss getting his share of balls thrown his way.
Throw Freddie Davis in the mix and I just don't see how Randle El elbows his way into that lineup for more than 60 touches. Could happen, but you're talking about a combination of things happening.
This offense hasn't got the job done the last few years so eventually people are going to be replaced. That's just how the NFL works. If Kelly can stay healthy he's going to be on the field. Marko M. looks like he's going to be a factor too. IMO ARE will not be here next year and S. Moss is not far behind him. |

Agreed. I think next year Moss is this year's ARE, and next year's ARE is this year's Thrash. As I said in another post on another thread, it's not ARE's fault he was given the contract he was given. And he wasn't brought here to be the #2. He was brought here to play the slot and Lloyd was supposed the #2, if not the #1. |
re: Randle El still useful?
I was watching an old Illinois-Indiana game last night on the Big Ten Network. Randel El was the QB and I was amazed how incredible of a college player he was. He did not throw many passes, but completed those he did throw, but it was his amazing runs on nearly EVERY play that were stunning. The defense knew he was going to run and he'd still bust off 20+ yard runs routinely.
I had forgotten how explosive he was. It really makes me think he can still contribute despite all of the naysayers. Sure, that was college, against college defenses, in an option offense...but he seemed to have instincts that should carry over. With that said, I have no idea when the "dancing" started on punt returns, he was much more decisive back then. However, he can still be a solid slot WR for us. He has shown this the last few years on much needed 3rd downs and critical plays. If we get him off the punt returns, I believe not only will the criticism die down, but I think he'll be a more effective WR. Now that he'll be open more often since defenses have to contend with up to 5 WRs instead of 2...he should have his best year yet as a Redskin. It's too bad no NFL teams can run the option successfully, because he'd more praised as a running QB than Vick, McNabb and any others. He has/had incredible skills, just not completely a skill set that transferred into the NFL at his position. If anyone has the Big Ten Network, keep an eye out for this game, you'll be amazed. Thoughts on our former QB wide receiver and any predictions on his performance this season? Most people around here seem to want him out of town, but I believe he'll be an important piece of the offense this season.
Case in point, that is why you hear scouts and sports reporters say what they say about Tim Tebow. Great college player, one of the best of all time. But will not be so good in the pros. The knock on ARE was never his skills and the way he plays. It was how much money Snyder threw at what most would call a "career #3" wide receiver. |
re: Randle El still useful?
Randle El is one of those untouchable fan favorites who is able to stick around because of his cap number even though he doesn't do much for us.

re: Randle El still useful?
Right, a waste of money and overall disappointment for the team. This was a bad signing when it happened and if I remember the Brandon Lloyd trade and signing happened around the same time. 2 more poor FO signings in a long line of stupid ass FO moves. The FO needs to realize championships are built through the draft. Drafting depth and trading picks for old players like Jason Taylor

I agree that eventually he will be nasty in the slot just like Wes Welker. |

I like him too. But having small average wr's isn't doing this offense any good and it seems to hurt us in the red zone. But let's see how he does in the slot this year. |
re: Randle El still useful?
If he becomes a to-go guy on 3rd down and scores 6+ TDs because the defense is concentrating on the tall WRs, Moss and trying to remember Cooley in the red zone, wouldn't you agree that he's valuable enough to be paid?
IF he excels in the role, he's definitely worth the price this year...the other years, we'll just have to eat the cost.
Don't they have someone else at Redskins Park that can get take out? |

ARE should have been playing the slot from day one with the redskins, but with no number 2 receiver he was forced into action. |
re: Randle El still useful?
I like ARE. As a mater of fact I am sitting here in a Randle El jersey, but I am not sure of his usefulness. he is not a good punt returner and his numbers have not been great. I can't imagine he is going anywhere but i am not sure it would make a huge difference if he did

agreed, not great but decent; in 08; 53 receptions, 593 yrds, 4 td's I think he can put up no.s if he plays the slot & one of the other wr's becomes a deep threat in addition to Moss. ARE can get open in the middle of the field and he's been very dependable, doesn't drop much. He's just not a burner & he doesn't work well on the outside, near the sideline. He runs good crossing routes/slants & finds pockets in zones well. |
Re: Randle El still useful?
I should qualify my statement about punt returning he was 54th in the league last year with a 6.5 yard average and two fumbles. so he held it pretty good but not much in the way of yards
