Re: Obama's speech to students today
It's going to be on TV in a few mintues. The speech, which wasn't revised, was released around noon yesterday. The uproar was surrounding some language in the cirriculum, not the speech itself. It said something to the effect of, write the president and let him know how you can help him/country. The White House pulled it and that was that.

It's a sad day when the President of the United States can't address our school children with a positive message about individual responsibility, hard work, and staying in school. Thankfully, and rightfully, some noteworthy Republicans have taken a stand and basically called this silly.
Well from what I read it was revised unless the person speaking for the white house was wrong.

Clip from the article:
She noted that President George H.W. Bush made a similar address to schools in 1991. Like Obama, Bush drew criticism, with Democrats accusing the Republican president of making the event into a campaign commercial.
Critics are particularly upset about lesson plans the administration created to accompany the speech. The lesson plans, available online, originally recommended having students "write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president."
The White House revised the plans Wednesday to say students could "write letters to themselves about how they can achieve their short-term and long-term education goals."
"That was inartfully worded, and we corrected it," Higginbottom said.

Correct, the plan was revised the speech was not. Maybe I said it inartfully:)
The problem came when Obama's staff or who ever came up with the idea wanted to have the children write an essay to themself on what they can do to help Obama. I think if they would have asked the kids to write on what they could do to help the US there would not have been the fuss. I'm sure after all this attention they have reviewed his speech and changed and removed anything that would be controversial. Not sure why parents are now bitching about this when they send their kids to goverment run schools, have teachers that are goverment employees, and most belong to the left leaning teachers union. That one reason my children go to private schools.
Exactly. So let me get this straight -- parents of children in public schools are upset that they'll be lectured and indoctrinated by a government official?

MAN.......this is some...........SERIOUS ridicularity!
Parents who ....have a problem with the President advocating the importance of education and the responsibility is THEIRS to execute the success or failure of same?
AND they would prefer the kids to write a letter to themselves rather than the President to voice what "they" can do to help............
WTF planet am I on?
I think most would agree with that the problem came when they wanted the kids to write an essay to themself on what they could do to help Obama (which in my opinion is making it political) when they could have said write an essay on how to help the US. I also as a Rep. don't have a problem with him talking to the children but I do feel it should not include anything that could be seen as political. That could also be looked at as trying to brainwash kids. I have heard that parents are also keeping their kids home from school so they can see the speech which makes no sense as they can see it when they get home and Obama wants them in school.
you have got to be kidding? so the parents that keep their kids out of school aren't brain washing them? ill bet they are saying Obama is full of crap, and no democrat knows shit. come on first. nice try
