I was thinking more along the line of the book (and movie) The Road where there was some kind of event that killed off most animals and plants.

did the mayans{with help from the aliens}know something?:) With all the shit going down lately and this solar storm predicted for 2012 kinda makes you wonder? What if this oil leak does rupture on the seabed floor? Combine that with a solar storm and who knows what else and the future looks pretty bleak

I think I could survive but there are a bunch of people who could not make it on their and they would be the real danger.

I lost power for 11 straight days when Hurricane Isabel hit. It was miserable. But then I could always go to my in-laws to stay. This is a bit different.

Looks like there are a few people here who dismiss the impact of going without electricity, even for a period of years. Just think about all of the people in the world's hospitals on life support, or having to go through surgery.

I don't think we realize how truly dependent we are on electricity.

I also heard this kind of storm would pretty much fry all types of circuit boards, and make cars and anything else with electronic circuit boards totally useless. Is it true?

I realize the impact but I just think I could survive if we did have something like that happen. Gas would be worth more then money and you would have to guard what you have like it was money. There was a show last year on Discovery where they had people survive for 45 days like the world had pretty much ended. Its called The Colony and its getting ready to come back on.

I'm not sure how much use gas would be if all the electronic ignition switches were fried. Old cars and machines would still work, in theory. It's tough to say, but I think woodworking tools would have the most value to me -- like axes, hand saws, chisels, augers, etc. Water purification would also be important.

Ghettodog don't worry we would look out for you because I think you would need some help.LOL Gas is transportation (land and sea), electricity from generator (powers all hand tools and more), gas would become the life blood and the new currency. All those tools you named are great but while your splitting wood by hand I have my chain saw running through the stuff like butter. Then if I'm real lucky I know some with a log splitter and we can have enough wood for the winter in a days work. You would still be on you second log with an axe. I would use my small john boat (does not burn much gas) to get around the river to fish, hunt and crab.
