Re: Shanahan on upcoming game.
Keim is reporting that Royster will also play against TB. I agree with skinsfan69, no need to play Hightower. He's shown what he can do.
9. Rookie running back Evan Royster, who has not played the past two games, will play Thursday vs. Tampa Bay. |
Re: Shanahan on upcoming game.
Helu can only have 5 reps a game and still be a threat to make a big play. Torain needs to be the workhorse back or else he won't be that productive.

Re: Shanahan on upcoming game.
I think next game we'll see a healthy dose of Torain vs. Royster. That's the battle that needs to be settled. Hightower and Helu are secured, so I doubt we'll see them except for maybe a series.

exactly -- its nice to have a decent stable of backs. None of them have really done much in the NFL, except for Hightower kinda, but they all seem like solid plug and play backs |
Re: Shanahan on upcoming game.
Hightower has made some plays for AZ. Wasn't he a good threat for them when they went to the SB. He was the third down pass catching back.

Re: Shanahan on upcoming game.
I look at it like this. With tandem running backs, you could use two similar guys like a Torain and a Hightower, but it works more effectively if you pair a banger with a burner. In this case it'd be Helu being the burner whereas Hightower is the banger. It doesn't matter where they rank on the depth chart but Helu would be a great change of pace back to Hightower, which is why I think Hightower and Helu will see most of the carries this season, provided they stay healthy. Helu won't see much pt as a pass blocker because that's Hightower's strength. Torain and Hightower have a similar skill set, it's just that Torain is injury prone and Hightower has fumbling problems that hopefully have been corrected lol.
Either way, I'm excited about what we have at running back. It's nice to see us keep up with two back trends in the NFL.
Hightower, Torain and Helu are not likely to all be active on game day. I look for Helu and Torain to be up and down the inactive list depending on injury and other areas of need as the season progresses. |

Don't they usually have 3 rbs active? Maybe only if the 3rd guy is playing teams? If Torain is active, that makes it more likely 2 others will be, given his history of injuries. |

If Torain is active on teams yes, otherwise if Hightower and Helu are 1-2 on game day, there's nothing for Torain to do. One would think he would have to produce in some form to have a spot on Sundays. |
Re: Shanahan on upcoming game.
There is no doubt Torain will make the team cause he's a known quantity. Royser will go to the practice squad.

Re: Shanahan on upcoming game.
Does Torain play teams?

Re: Shanahan on upcoming game.
I'm still surprised at how well Hightower has come in here and taken the rb job. I didn't think we was this good. I know it's only pre season but he just seems like such a great fit for this running game. And he runs with authority and has the breakaway speed and can catch. Not sure what Az was thinking. Let's hope he keeps it up.

Re: Shanahan on upcoming game.
Landry is out again for the last game vs. TB but insists he will be ready for the giants on 9/11

Re: Shanahan on upcoming game.
Landry and OJ haven't played at all together. A little concerned there.

Re: Shanahan on upcoming game.
yeah, I'm wondering if Landry's injury was a big concern this year for the coaches, thus the Gomes pick was needed to build depth there. I question whether landry will be able to go on 9/11.

Either Landry's injury or Moore...I'm not sure if Gomes is more of a SS or a FS, and even with the acquisition of Atogwe I think they were concerned depth at safety. I haven't heard much about Horton, so I wonder if he's the odd man out in the safeties group. |
