True, but these two are the greatest ever at their positions. And Andersen is the NFL's all-time leading scorer. They're just as worthy as most of the names on that list.
Never said they're not worthy, but what regular player do you bump to vote in a specialist? That's always going to be the thought process when they vote on kickers. It's just hard to justify it. |
Re: Hall of Fame Finalists 2014
I got no problem bumping most of the list for Guy and/or Anderson. They were both head and shoulders above others at their position and consistent weapons for their teams - Guy moreso than Anderson (IMHO).
In: Andersen, Brown, DeBartolo, Guy, Haley, Jones, Reed (7). Out: Bettis, Brooks, Dungy, Greene, Harrison, Humphrey, Lynch, Shields, Strahan, Williams. Sure, you can make a case for each of the others, but most (Bettis, Dungy, Greene, Humphrey, Lynch, Strahan) strike me as belonging in the Hall of Very Good. Harrison, maybe, but he shouldn't get in before Brown or Reed - they paved the way for him. The harder calls are Brooks and Williams - each was a real game changer (Brooks in particular). Sure, specialists are only on the field a few plays - but, when they are consistently weapons for their team and demonstrate that over years, then I think it raises the bar. It's tough and I don't think either makes it. I would hope one does (if so, Guy - he, too, was a consistent game changer). |

Because Haley was better. Strahan had some monster years and some mediocre/bad years. Haley was consistent throughout his career. I'd say Strahan had a longer career with more numbers but Haley had more of an impact when he was playing. They both deserve to get in but I'd vote for Haley first too. |

Jones & Brooks, everyone else is Hall of Almost.

They both deserve to get in but I'd vote for Haley first too.
I agree they both deserve to get in, but I'd vote for Strahan first. His career stats are quite a bit better, partially owing to him playing longer than Haley, but Strahan averaged 9.4 sacks a year, while Haley averaged 7.7. Strahan also had more turnovers and set the NFL record for sacks in a season. And he's 5th on the all-time sacks list. |
