Re: 2017 Free Agent PFF rankings
Here are a few nuggets I picked up from the list:
- Pierre Garcon is the top-rated FA WR with a grade of 85.8. - Chris Baker is the #3 ranked DL with an 82.2 rating. Only Calais Campbell at 90.4 and Kawann Short at 87.7 were rated higher. - There are nine safeties with grades above 80.0. Their grades range from 81.6 to 88.6. All of them are UFA's. I feel strongly that we must make every effort to re-sign Pierre Garcon. He does it all for this team and he is as tough as nails. Chris Baker is all about effort and production. He doesn't take off plays. My fantasy off-season scenario is for us to re-sign Chris and sign Calais Campbell as FA's and then to draft a DL stud in the first round. There is an unusually large group of solid FA safeties this year. We need to sign one of them. |

I am not big on spending big dollars in FA, but the deficiencies in DL and Safety positions in our starting line up has been the #1 reason we are not taking the next step. It is foolish to think we can improve to the next level by Draft alone and signing other teams FA cast offs. We have to complete the foundation building of our lines and defense. Then strictly use the draft to finish out the roster. We have two big salaries at WR that need to moved or lowered by extending and ton of depth at that position. That does not make sense to have so much depth and two really high salary guys at that position. I really like DJax but his high salary needs to go so we can better complete our team. It is time to get serious about our defense and O line. Finish the foundation. If we signed Calais Cambell and a legit FA Free Safety, that would give us the flexibility to use our 1st round pick on a BPA that might be a great starting guard or center. We might become a run team and be able to stop the run. Imagine that.... |
Re: 2017 Free Agent PFF rankings
Compton takes a lot of bad angles, because he doesn't react fast enough or is just slow to the ball. He's fine as a backup, just can't be a starter on a decent defense.
Baker is good, maybe alot of this depends on what DC they bring in and which direction he wants to go with the defense. |
That hurts to read, but once we take off the "homer" glasses, that's about what my head saw, reagrdless of what my heart tried to turn it into. Junk is junk.
Will Compton was ranked lower than even I thought, but PFF doesn't lie! I was surprised that Cullen Jenkins was rated higher then CT though. Maybe that was the homer in me, thinking that CT actually produced some this year. The rest of those guys...sorry to say it, but they just took up space and it was evident.
this is why i don't like PFF . . . CT was a beast . . . great yards per carry . . . great blocking . . . great pass catching . . . why is that a 66 grade? |

Re: 2017 Free Agent PFF rankings
Profootball Focus just ranked all the secondaries in the league from the season...and they put us 26th overall. But Josh Norman was the real deal. :
"Big-money free agent Josh Norman didn’t quite match his 2015 season, but was still a considerable improvement for the Washington secondary. In fact, Norman actually made plays on the ball more often than he did last season; the former Panther intercepted or broke up 20 percent of his targets, the highest percentage in the league. Beyond Norman, injuries definitely did not help the Redskins’ secondary. However, Will Blackmon played well when given a chance, and Bashaud Breeland played better as the season progressed. Missed tackles were an issue for Washington’s defensive backs. Their 61 missed tackles were fifth-most among NFL secondaries, and Duke Ihenacho recorded the second-most for a defensive back, with 15." You know what, Duke Ihenacho needs to go. |
Re: 2017 Free Agent PFF rankings
Love Compton and understand he is a fan favorite, but this isn't preschool.....we can't continue to have him starting at LB is we want to have a successful defense, he is too slow

Blackmon can go too, I think he's undersized for safety. Bree/Norman can stay as starters and obviously Fuller needs more development, but those are the only three I'm keeping. I'm hoping Cravens balls out at SS but I don't think we can guarantee it. |
Re: 2017 Free Agent PFF rankings
One thing I noticed with both Duke and DWhitner was the poor angles they took coming up to fill the box. Many times filling the wrong hole completely and allowing the RB to burst to the third level untouched.

Re: 2017 Free Agent PFF rankings
Couple things we have to consider when looking at these rankings:
1. This is just one year of play 2. look at the snap count because it could be based on limited/rotational play, 3. you have to look at scheme 4. then you have to think why others guys graded low? Were they playing in a new scheme or dealing with injury? just things we arm chair GMs need to consider IMO, I think there is a lot of fools gold in these secondary FA rankings of PFF. You look at Guard, couple Linebackers and couple DE/DT and you see some quality pieces there. |

If I could, I'd probably reach the wrong conclusions anyway. Who do you like at safety? Which ones do you think could play center field for us? |

Eric Berry is a king no doubt about his talent, outside of that, I don't see a lot. You have some potential SS guys, but Im not paying anyone except back-up money to Sua Cravens. At Corner you wait and see how the market shakes out, but you could find a cheap, decent vet to put opposite of Norman on the outside if you think Fuller isn't ready. I think Im keeping Bree in the slot full time. |
Re: 2017 Free Agent PFF rankings
Compton is and should be a back up NFL linebacker and special teams guy. That's who he is. If he plays 16 games he gets exposed. To me his main problem is he's just too freakin' slow. What concerns me is Spaight couldn't beat him out so what does that say about him??????
I would keep Blackmon. He's not a safety so I'm not sure why they put him there. He actually played well as our 3rd corner in 2015. He should have been our 3rd or 4th corner, not safety. I'm done with these coaches switching positions on defense. This ain't college ball. Maybe that's one of the reasons you couldn't get off the field on 3rd down. |

Scot needs to gain a better appreciation for speed in his draft picks, IMHO. |
