Re: Audible
those 3rd down routes were prefectly laid out, someone was always open and Mark zipped it to them.
but yeah Brunell can hold on to it too long just as much as Ramsey does. that flea-flicker could've done real damage but Brunell pumped and waited for the corner to fall or something before he threw it deep. can't just be late in the 4th quarter Mark. |
Re: Audible
It's simpler than that and Gibbs should know it. You call two plays in the huddle, a run and a pass. If the run is not there, you simply shift to the pass formation and go. You don't need a lot of complicated assignments being distributed at the line. That's what doomed Spurrier's audible system. I agree, running the ball with the box overstacked was not brilliant playcalling unless you are intentionally trying to run down the clock.

Re: Audible
and can we please kill the WR screen??? they even call it when no blitz is coming! 2yd gain, loss of down, and keeps everyone up to the line of schrimmage. whats the big idea??

Re: Audible
Was it me or did seattle seem to know every time we were going to run every time we ran.
It really doesn't matter what a team knows against a decent offense. Portis still gained 106yds. The question isn't that they know what we're going to do, but can they stop it and they didn't stop it. Every team knows that McNabb is going to throw the ball to T.O on most plays, but they still cannot stop his movement of the sticks! The Redskins just have to call the right play at the right time depending where we are on the field and what the score is. |
Re: Audible
If the play calling was fine then why was it always third and long? yes ,brunell did a great job of converting 3rd downs. But if you run twice, and its 3rd and long...youre not doing something right. Portis averaged just over 3 a carry again. Pathetic. No running back can run through a 9 man front. The announcers even laughed and twice put up numbers counting the number of defenders in the box, and they still ran it up the middle.
If gibbs makes a good pass play, hes going to jump like a school boy then hand it off. Hes very predicatable. There was one or two drives that we ran the west coast offense and it was working great. We just have to do that more. You can almost tell when its musgrave or gibbs calling the plays.
those 3rd and long plays that you are referring to were at the end of the game, up to that point the skins found themselves in 3rd and very manigable on a consistant basis. portis did average 3.6 yards a carry, not great but not pathetic either. what did betts average? i'm quite certain the same person who's calling the plays at the beginning of the game is the same person calling them at the end. the skins offense easily outplayed the seahawks defense today. the skins defense had a few breakdowns and thats the only reason the game was close. |

i think they only ran it twice today . once for a loss of 2 and the other time for a gain of 7. |

Im not saying betts is better than portis, im saying portis is better than his numbers. And I dont think the same person is calling the plays the whoel game. Musgrave calls down the play, and gibbs decides if he wants to run that play. |

i agree gibbs gets very conservative at the end of a game if his team has the lead but i don't blame him for that, he didn't think the seahawks could score on our d but the defense had some breakdowns at the end.i didn't think you were saying betts was better than portis i was just wondering what betts average was because between betts and portis the run game was very effective today. your right about the playcalling coming from the booth to gibbs and then gibbs desiding to keep it or change it but it's not coming from musgrave. musgrave is on the sidelines with gibbs. |
Re: Audible
Don Breaux is OC, Musgrave is Quarterbacks coach.
|
Re: Audible
my understanding is playcalling comes from Jack Burns up in the booth, and Gibbs OKs or vetos it.
i'd like to hear what Gibbs thought of the running game. i credit Brunell and Thrash for lots of crisp, clutch 3rd and longs, but like Brunell and Moss themselves said, we shouldn't be in so many 3rd and longs. we really are looking the gifthorse in the mouth tho. we converted a lot this game and that's solid proof of offensive improvement. little by little.. |
Re: Audible
gibbs doesn't like audibles cause they can result in penalties... so running into a stacked line and wasting a down is a good solution if i've ever heard it :(
I thought it was REALLY strange too, i mean seattle wasn't even trying to hide it.
LOL! That's definitely not true about Gibbs and audibles. I can understand that considering you've only had last year and this year as proof. Listening to Brunell call plays today, however, we audibled quite a few times. We run those plays to wear the defense down and consider the fact that on those long third down plays, we were converting with the pass. The playcalling is exactly what we needed to do to keep the Seahawks offense - and our defense - off the field. |

Portis should have had a lot higher average. He was getting 7-10 yd gains a bunch of times after we packed them off with a bunch of pass plays. My main point is why we run with 9 in the box and not audible more. There were a few times that we did, and got it to cooley, id just like to see it more. This game was a huge step in the right direction though. Doing it once was more than we did last week. |

yeah i remembered rolling my eyes a bit when the first two offensive plays in the game were a WR screen and a Counter-trey for middling yards...you can tell what i was expecting. seriously where are all the downfield throws and stretch plays we were promised all off-season? |

Correct... "Burns -- an offensive consultant who has been replaced by Bill Musgrave as quarterbacks coach -- will call the initial play after occasional input from offensive coordinator Don Breaux." |

It really doesn't matter what a defense tries to do, they must execute and make the key plays and Seattle, Dallas and Chicago couldn't do it. Hail to the Redskins! |
