well, our dead cap and stupid signings have already severely limited the skins buying power this offseason, and over the next few years it's probably going to be worse anyways.
But at least we're not in "cap hell". |
Re: NFL Live
If there's any truth to this, the team obviously is looking for a replacement for Springs, or at least planning in case they can't restructure his deal.

Re: NFL Live
But at least we're not in "cap hell".
I wouldn't say we're in cap hell. I would say, however, that other teams are in much better cap shape and our cap situation is limiting our ability to compete with quality free agents at positions of need (e.g., CB). So far, the only cap casualty of note has been Pierce who wasn't cut, but couldn't be resigned due to cap considerations. Springs, Daniels, Wynn and a few others might be cap casualties, but they're getting old anyways. While we're not in cap hell, our cap situation is definately going to limit our options in the future. Most likely, we'll be forced to rely more on the draft over the next few years. Maybe that's a good thing. |
Re: NFL Live
I have been hearing rumors today about Bly going to Denver. This doesn't come from a article. This comes from Detroit radio stations.I live a hour away from Detroit and the word right now is Denver. That would kill our chances of getting him.We have nothing to trade and Denver has our 3rd round pick to trade.:( I was hoping he would just be cut,but if teams want to trade picks away.Detroit's not going to cut him.
|
Re: NFL Live
Michael Smith on NFL Live just got finished saying he's pretty sure Dre Bly is gonna end up a Redskin. Apparently we are gonna look to bring back Smoot at a big discount if the Vikings release him as well. I guess Springs doesn't want to restructure, and he's NEVER healthy, so I wouldn't care if we cut him. I think we could get Smoot and Bly for combined what we'd cough up for Nate Clements. I'd rather have the extra bodies than the overpriced star, especially if Springs leaves...
And apparently Nate Clements is looking for a contract with between $20-25 million guaranteed. We just can't go out and spend like that again. We need depth at too many positions to blow our wad on one guy. |

$20-25 million for Clements is absurd if true. Wouldn't that be more than Champ Bailey type money?
That would be Champ Bailey type money. And apparently that's what he's looking for. I guess San Fran is really looking to upgrade their defense, and they have a ton of money to spend. From what I read, they will be the front runner for Clements when the market opens. And yes, I think Smoot and Bly would be duct taping the titantic. But you've got to think, both players are under 30, and Smoot knows our system, staff, and the city. He'd fit right back in, and we'd get him for a fraction of what Minnesota paid for him. A rotation of Bly, Smoot, and Carlos could be pretty good. Better than Wright and Rumph for sure!! And I don't think bringing in Nate Clements would immediately right the ship either. Sure he's great, but we need so much on D, I think spreading the money around on decent players is a much smarter move than blowing it all on Clements. |
Re: NFL Live
I would be happy with this move, but if we get Bly.We have to get another corner.Bly also has had health problems. So Bly and Smoot would be great add a d-line guy in the draft.Man that sounds good to me.

Re: NFL Live
I would take Bly and Smoot over Clements in a heart beat... Bly in the past has been regarded as the 2nd best corner in the league. but I hope this doesn't involve the Portis-bly trade

Smoot/Bly could definitely happen, but there are some "IF's" that need to go our way. According to the Wash Post, many in our organization would be "open to bringing Smoot back" if he is released by the Vikes this week (which apparently is more likely to happen than not). The other "IF" is IF Bly, who has been given permission from Detroit to seek a trade, looks to come to DC, what will Detroit want from us? We don't have any depth on defense to give away, and we sure don't have any draft picks to part with (not this year anyway). I really don't want to give them Portis. If we do, we need to get a high draft pick in addition to Bly. The other possibility is we move Springs to safety to play next to Taylor (provided Springs' restructures, and talks aren't going well). If we could bring in Smoot and/or Bly, that would be a pretty solid secondary... |

I just read that John Clayton is doubtful that Matt Millen can turn Dre Bly into anything other than a middle round pick. That's music to my ears!!! I'd give up a 3rd or 4th round pick for a player who is top 5 at his position, under 30 years old, and fills a pressing need. I hope Clayton is right. |

There's one big problem with this.We don't have a 3rd or a 4th.So you think Detroit is going to go for our 3rd or 4th next year?I am willing to bet they want a pick this year. |

I pray he goes to Denver. If the Lions want a 3rd this year (which we don't have), we'll have to give up next year's 2nd. If the Lions want a 4th this year (which we don't have), we'll have to give up next year's 3rd. Moreover, Bly will be 30 before the season starts. |
Re: NFL Live
So my best friend is a Jets fan, and he belongs to the GangGreen Message board (pretty much the Jets equivalent of the Warpath, but nowhere near as good :-)). He said there is talk all over the place of Portis and #6 pick to the Jets for Vilma and the #25 pick. And we all know our history of doing business with the Jets. What about this deal? I could do it.. Vilma is the best young middle linebacker in football. And with the 25th pick we could possibly get DE like Jarvis Moss from Florida or Anthony Spencer from Purdue. Then just resign Duckett and start Betts?? This might be worth a seperate thread...
I moved to Florida from DC 7 years ago (I'm moving back this July thank God), and I don't have the benefit of any Redskins radio. I heard Adalius Thomas is very high on our radar as well?? Can anyone confirm? |
Re: NFL Live
Agreed that Portis IS a Gibbs back, that's whay JG made the trade for him.
But you're wrong about zone blocking; the Skins didn't employ any until midseason 06. There was an article in the Wash. Post about it & I remember discussing it here. Bugel was resistant to it but Saunders likes it. The beneficiary of zone blocking was Betts, he had some huge holes to hit. Wait till we see Portis hit those kind of holes!! Cross your fingers that we re sign Dock!
at least we are close to the same page freddy...but they did run zone blocking in 05, ill take you to the bank on that. when you hear the term stretch runs which is what they went to in 05 that is just a way of saying zone blocking...bugges did resist at first but they found that clinton was not patient enough to run thier man on man counter treys so they went to the zone blocking schemes he excelled in denver, 1 cut and go. enough of that topic, all this talk at corner, which i agree we need help with but safety is a huge concern. i say keep springs because he really has played great when healthy. dre bly would be a hell of a pick up at the right price. thier are also some good corners in this draft like chris houston. i wouldnt mind that draft day deal with the jets that everyone is hyping and getting vilma and then at number 25 getting chris houston. i would personally go for a safety in free agency unless you canget laron landry from lsu after trading back to get more picks. some free agent safeties might me dwight smith from minn or ken hamlin from seattle. |
Re: NFL Live
i only go through with the deal with the jets if it is ladell betts not portis who we are trading.

I agree. They'd have to sweeten the pot with another decent pick or two. But Vilma is only 24, and has proven he's a great leader, he has played with several Redskins at the U, and he's a tackling machine. He can be a perennial candidate for defensive MVP. I believe he is the next great middle linebacker in the NFL. Portis is the man and all, but draft picks aside, I'd rather have a Vilma than CP 1 for 1. Especially with Betts already resigned for a much smaller contract than Portis has. Plus we have the ability to bring Duckett back as well should Portis leave. |
Re: NFL Live
Trading portis is stupid period. He's young, he's a hoss, and he's the face of the offense...don't give me any of that Ladell Betts crap either. I hate how everyone forgets so fast. Portis carried us to the playoffs, Ladell fumbles too much. I'm glad no one here makes decisions for the REAL team.

well said if we trade anything for bly it should be a 2008 2nd or 3rd pick |

I strongly disagree. Trading a 2nd or 3rd round pick for a 30 y.o. malcontent is not my idea of a good trade. And, in my opinion, there should not be much of a difference in the value of a 2007 2nd rounder and a 2008 2nd rounder. |

I'd trade betts before Portis. I thought the original rumor was portis for Bly and their 1st rounder... I could be wrong though

that is stupid to get rid of portis and bly isnt that bad he is still solid and smoot and bly would be good ok maybe a 4th rounder for next year |
Re: NFL Live
I'm convinced Dracula will start a blood mank before we trade Portis or Betts. Anyone who thinks we will trade Portis obviously have not heard the way Gibbs speaks so highly of him.
This robbing Peter to pay Paul speculation is completely absurd. Granted we need a lot of help on defense, and we won't fix it completely this offseason. Recking our running game to patch a defense that needs much work dosen't make a lot of sense to me. The running game (4th in the NFL) last season was our strongest suite, I can't see disrupting that for a temporary fix. |

Heck there are probably teams in other sports rumored to have traded for them. As for Duckett, I've heard some rumors he's already headed elsewhere (as in there's a team out there that will pretty much sign him rather quickly) As for Bly, the Broncos are a strong possibility but I suspect there's another team we're not hearing about yet. |

Re: NFL Live
We'd be stupid to trade for anyone, unless it involves our 5th, 6th, or 7th round pick this year (or possibly Betts if the deal is heavily stacked in our favor). Plain and simple: we don't have ANYTHING to trade.
If we end up trading away ANY picks from next year's draft, I'll be sincerely disappointed in Gibbs. I will definitely lose most, if not all, trust in him. As for Portis, he's our best player. As far as I'm concerned, there is no question about that. Why would we trade away our best player (and give up picks, to boot)? There are only two players I would trade Portis for: Peyton Manning and LT. I would also consider trading him for 3 1st round picks. That will never happen, so forget about trading Portis. |

Ya no shit. **** trading Portis. It has been hammered into the ground already but heres my 2 pennies. Portis IS the Washington Redskins. Let me repeat. PORTIS IS THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS! He embodies what the core of this team is. He (almost) singlehandedly took us to the playoffs last year. The man is the shit. He's young and beastly and he aint going NOWHERE. If we traded him for anything but 3 first rounders and a second next year, I would make a point to FORGET that the redskins existed for the next 4-5 years. |

I Love Clinton Portis and I don't care who knows it. He's the best football player on our team and I think next year in all of football. You heard it here tonight for the first time. Portis will be the MVP in 2007. Take it to the bank. No way they would trade him. Betts, maybe, but not Clinton. Gibbs would never do that to him. |
Re: NFL Live
AMEN! Portis is a monster. Ya ok, his numbers maybe not be 19 carries for 652 yards and 9 TD's but, who cares? Portis has the skill to get it done. He gets those crucial 2-5 yards for the first. He fights for that extra "oomph" at the goaline. Portis has a nose for the endzone only rivaled by LT's presence. I would say he isnt even rivaled by LT but, that stop on 4th and 1 in the dallas game came to mind so, scratch that.
The man plays hurt and plays hard. He is a winner. WINNER. Period. Betts is great but, he's not a winner. Portis can close the deal. You KNOW that barring some soul-selling miracle, Portis will not make that fumble a la' Betts in the ST. Louis game to send it into OT. Portis is GOD. |
