Re: Brunell Deal Done
I'd feel as comfortable with Brunell coming off the bench as about any other backup given the situation. Just as long as Gibbs knows that no matter how good he plays that is exactly what he is.....a backup.
He's undoubtably much better suited to be a backup right now than a starter. That said, there are a bunch of teams out there who would be better off starting Brunell than their current guy (I don't think we are one of them anymore).

Ironically, one of those teams may very well be Jacksonville.

Re: Brunell Deal Done

i think brunell has been a great team player. he's been the starter and he's been the back up, he's restructured a few times to help the team have some cap relief and through everything i've never heard of him complaining at all. i would like to thank you, mark brunell, for always putting the team first.

We need a veteran backup. I'm happy with Brunell.

Re: Brunell Deal Done

Brunell the starter = proven mediocre

Brunell the backup = perhaps fantastic?

Something tells me that MB's style of play at this point in his career would be very condusive, for the most, to being a quality backup. Usually a backup gets a trimmed down playbook and can take advantage of the lack of scouting on 'his' offense. Being that he thrives in the short game and can complete high percentages of passes and has a good feel for the game and mind too I think as a short term starter(ie: campbell has a minor injury keeping him out a game or two) he can be as effective as any QB we could have.

I am good as gold with MB as a backup. As a long term starter he'd struggle. As he has already.

I think this is the smartest post I've seen on the subject.

Re: Brunell Deal Done

Brunell wins games by not losing them. That could be the same for young Jason Campbell too. That's why we need to improve the defense so our QBs don't have compete in a shootout.

Updated Brunell cap info from LaCanfora:

We save $3.3 million in 2007. He agreed to drop his base salary all the way down from $5 million in 2007 to $820,000. In exchange, he'll get a roster bonus of $1.0 million, payable after minicamp.

That's a big drop in salary, especially considering that there are no signs that he got a signing bonus to make it happen. This is a straight up paycut, and doesn't put off any cap hits into the future. One might say, way to go Mark, what a team player. Of course, the Skins played hardball on this one. They surely said dude, accept a paycut or we'll drop you and you'll be lucky to make vet minimum. He surely saw the wisdom of taking the paycut.

But who cares how it happened, bottom line, that's $3.3 million, quite a bit of space.
