Re: Portis Blocks Taylor
The Phins sideline was yelling for Roth to look out... Portis had him lined up from 15 yards away. If Roth didn't duck at the last second then that could have been the hit of the year. Plays like that fire up the team and take some of the wind out of the opponent. I love Portis for that type of effort and mean streak
Thoose Phins players must yell real loud because watching that play on NFL replay that play happened on the skins side of the ball and with all of the crowd noise he must have good hearing. |

It was good to see Portis on Sunday. He looked really fresh and those types of blocks do seperate him from Betts. I agree. Thought maybe he should have been given like 21-23 carries rather than 17. Betts didn't seem to have the same pop that game. |
Re: Portis Blocks Taylor
I agree Portis looked really fresh and he looked like he was ready to go. Betts had a couple really nice runs, but he didn't seem to have it quite like last year. I'm sure we will see the Betts from last year return in the next couple weeks.

Re: Portis Blocks Taylor
it's definitely better to split the carries in my opinion. i guess that may take away from a guy who's on fire. but it will pay off late in the season.

Are you sure?... I'm going to go back and look at the tape. I could have overlooked that as I was jumping around and tackling my wife |

I just watched tape of this play and you are WRONG! And to be absolutely honest with you... the fact that you cannot tell the difference between the Skins sideline and the opposing teams sideline in my book says your opinions on football are a little dicey. Maybe if you didn't watch the scrambled version of NFL replay you could weigh in. |

Your right and not sure what I was looking at last night. I'll make sure that I get your OK to weigh in next time. |

Unfortunately it also sometimes seperates his shoulder, as has been noted. Of course I'd take a seperated shoulder from a clean block over poor Gramatica ending his career a few years ago celebrating. |
Re: Portis Blocks Taylor
Yes, it was along the Dolphins' sideline.

Re: Portis Blocks Taylor
After looking at it again, I totally change my view.
Clinton Portis was trying to help out Campbell and lit someone up. I said it was unnecessary at first, but Portis didn't know that. I'm not going to sit here and be an armchair judge of the play. He was trying to help out his QB, and it looked relatively clean. Props to CP, he's continually proves how much of a beast he really is. I just hope he can finish the season without being injured. |

I hope you could tell, my post was dripping with sarcasm. |
Samuels needs to finish off his blocks, not stand around after his initial block. That could've been a huge gain for us.
well, your right he should shouldnt he. not to mention he chipped on the DE to create the hole, then went to the second level and buried zach thomas, and i mean pancaked his ass (with the help of someone else). i will blame betts not samuels on that one considering he did over and above. he created the hole then cleared it, and betts should of done more with it. |

It was neither players fault as Samuals was looking for a block Betts had to moving to his right to avoid a D player and they just ran into each other. The funnest one I saw this week was in the Dallas game. I think Dallas had just made an int and the guy had an open field and a Dline man instead of running forward to held block ran sideways 5 or so yards and knocked his man out of bounds. The runner could have picked up another 10 to 20 yards as this lineman was only person close to him and it was so bad it looked as if he tried to knock him out. |
Re: Portis Blocks Taylor
Portis' block on Matt Roth reminded me of a few seasons back when he absolutely put Shelton Quarles to sleep in that Bucs game. Quarles hit the ground face first was lights out for a few seconds before he even moved. Great stuff. As long as he doesn't re-injure that surgically repaired shoulder, I'm all for his agressive blocking.

Re: Portis Blocks Taylor
The best blocking RB was Sweetness. In fact, during his playing days when Walter Payton was asked to envision his best play, he told the reporter it was making a devastating block on a blitzing LB and allowing his QB to throw a 90-yeard TD. This from the then-all time leading rusher. And a guy who NEVER ran out of bounds -- he would hit the DBs on the way out. Portis definitely has some of those tendencies.

Not to finish anything, I'm sure, but Betts is a far far better pass receiver than Portis. |
Re: Portis Blocks Taylor
I have to agree, Betts does work better with screen passes than Clinton, I still favor Clinton and I hope so does everyone else. Clinton can make moves Betts can't, they can both run people over too. Both are great backs though, no question.
Portis has always been the complete player.
I just wish Saunders would give him a chance to isolate against LBs downfield in the passing game. I believe Portis could be every bit as effective as Brian Westbrook and Tiki Barber as a receiver. |
Re: Portis Blocks Taylor
I totally agree with Soupermeister and Cowell. Big thanks to Earthquake for the using one of my replies as a quote.
Great Point! But does anyone have the Video or know where to find it?
OK, not sure if anyone posted it here or somewhere else, but here's a compilation of Portis blocks, the Miami block is included. He could have gotten flagged, it was behind the play, and there was some helmet to helmet contact. But the way he just launches himself, I thought of him as a small back, but he's got some definite pop. Portis reclaims his rightful status as an elite back this season... YouTube - Clinton Portis Blocking
Awesome video! That one against the Giants where I takes out two guys at the same time is sweet. After seeing that hit on Miami again I'm shocked he didn't get a flag. Awesome, brutal hit, but that's just plain dangerous for him and the other guy. Surprised no one was knocked out. |
Re: Portis Blocks Taylor
Great Video.
