Re: What Has Happened to the Redskins' Fan Base?
Again, if you re-read my post, I NEVER said that I, personally, know more than the current fan base. I'm just sharing observations. I'm not trying to step on anyone toes and I'm not trying to say that I know more than anyone else out there.
But you questioned the fan base as a whole, and by doing that you are insinuating that you are more knowledgeable, and then you proceed to botch some pretty basic facts.

Sorry but that's funny.
Actually, this topic was started as someone claiming that the average Redskin fan doesn't know as much as they used to... and by you pointing that out to us, you are in fact saying that you know more than the current crop of fans.

Yes, with the spread of the public access via the internet, the people who do not know as much have a larger platform (as has been pointed out)... but your premise indicated that you know more than the current average fan base (or you would not have started this thread)....
I didn't get the impression the OP was stating he knew more than the average fan. I took his points as his personal observations and nothing more. You can agree or disagree.

However, you guys got hung up on one miniscule mistake and ran with it. Like having one more playoff win in 10 years really makes a difference. He conceded that one specific point. You win. Good for you.

I have no problem calling out people when they make outrageous statements or assertions. I don't get the need for mocking people. Maybe you guys are just bored today.

And it gets worse...

The Redskins W/L record under Snyder is 68-76, not 70-79.
So what were you trying to say then in your original post?
Just that a lot of Redskins fans want to do the wave in the fourth quarter of a close game when our offense is on the field, and don't seem to understand some of the basic rules and game-management issues that occur during a game. Again, I'm not saying that I'm an NFL encyclopedia. These are just observations I've made and, to me, they run counter the reputation of being "knowledgeable" fans.

I got the 70-79 from an old Times article.

Re: What Has Happened to the Redskins' Fan Base?

We need a kicker and we should use our first round pick on one Either that or trade it for Payten Maning. and since we need a nother reciever for to be a endzone threat we should trade our second round pick for Mike Vrabel since he catches alot of touch downs.

See... I didn't even think to check that fact....

I still like this paragraph:

I've also noticed fans asking silly questions on message boards -- questions that, in my opinion, a "knowledgeable" fan base would never ask. They've included, "Can we as a sixth-seeded team host a playoff game?" "Why was that play called a touchback?" "Why are they running the ball here (when there's less than two minutes left in the game, the opposition has no timeouts and you're trying to run the clock out)?"

Is the average football fan in general asking this question... or someone who is still learning the game?

Actually 70-79 is correct when counting in the playoffs.

Well, he could have just said "Hey you know, you're right. I missed that. It's two wins, not one" and the response would have been much different. But instead he started spewing this bs about when Snyder "officially took over" instead of just owning up to his mistake right off the bat. It's like the people who say "We're so awful, we never keep our own players!!!" and then you point out guys like Betts, Sellers, Rock, Cooley, etc and they say "Yeah, well, let's see if they do it again this year and the next."

We've all made mistakes, been proven wrong, and corrected on more than one occassion. And the site is better because of it. But admitting fault seems to be a real problem for a lot of people. If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times the whole point of a message board isn't really to let the world know how much knowledge you have but to get more knowledge out of it than when you first joined. There's nothing wrong with being wrong, it happens to all of us. It's why I started the whole "I Was Wrong When..." thread, so people wouldn't be so afraid to admit when they're wrong.
In general the internet allows more people to have a voice than ever before. The majority of fans in the 80's could have been a bunch of slack jawed yolkles but you hardly ever got to hear them because they could only talk with other idiots in the room or call into to the radio after the game. Now we have a chance to read every little asinine thought that enters someone's mind as soon as they think it up.
I think the fan base for every team seems to have been dumbed down because of this.
Plus, if want to hear a bunch of idiots trying to talk about football you should come up here to Baltimore and take a listen to the majority of ravens fans.
I was also going to say the internet happened.

The internet has enabled stupid people worldwide to be noticed.

Re: What Has Happened to the Redskins' Fan Base?

Some of it may be because of the Dan Syder assembles his teams, big money, not much production, guys with off the field problems, and I also think when Jack Kent Cooke pasted ,RIP, that a lot of fans drifted away, because he was a cool owner who was around Redskins park with that little dog he had.

I wonder if that is because KB24 put quotation marks around the word knowledgeable in the original post. That is what it says under the site name."Discussion for the knowledgeable fan ".That could have made it feel like a personal attack to the mods and others.I know when I read that part of the post it made me wonder if we were being called idiots on this site.
I was also going to say the internet happened.

Some of the content in this thread is kinda off the wall (The first few pages are solid), but I'll throw my opinion in the ring.

I don't think this "decaying fanbase" phenomenon is exclusive to the Redskins. I think it's going in all of sports and much of society, but I'm not trying to be a sociologist here. IMO a few factors are responsible for what a lot of people perceive to be a less intelligent, less genuine group of football fans:

As Buster and several others pointed out, the internet is responsible for a lot. The blogosphere is massive nowadays. Anyone with internet access and an opinion can be heard- i.e. the "trolls" we refer to on this site.

Also, I think as technology has advanced, so has the "on demand" concept that is evident in every industry and every aspect of life. Everything is about bigger, better, faster, and what can rake in the most $$. We want what we want when we want it, and technology has made it easier to cater to this mindset. So in general people have become more critical, more impatient, and less thoughtful. One immediate way to equate this to football is how quickly we on this site want to jump on every free agent available. And as far as the Redskins, the way Danny in the past has tried to buy every good player available. We're also very fast to criticize.

Couple all of this with The Danny's commercialization of the Redskins brand, and more losses than wins during his ownership, and whammo. You get what appears to be a "dumbed down" fan base. Like I said though, I think you'll find this with a lot of fans in a lot of sports. It ain't just the Skins.

As for the fans at fedex, I personally have never been told to sit down or shut up.Granted I dont sit in every seat or go to every game but I just have never seen that at the game.By the way,If I had seen someone spit on a little girl,Redskin fan or not,That guys getting a haymaker upside his head.I am not a violent person but some things you just dont do.
